Head of Training & Development - Veterinary
Full-Time | Peoria, AZ | Flexible Schedule | Arizona CVT Required
Schedule: Full-time with flexible hours as needed, including occasional evenings and weekends, to support training and development across AVECCC locations.
Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is seeking a Head of Training and Development to lead clinical training, professional development, and onboarding for veterinary support staff across our emergency and critical care hospitals. This role will develop and implement training programs for Veterinary Technicians, Technician Assistants, Doctor's Assistants, Kennel Assistants, Lab Technicians, and Front Office teams, while partnering with hospital leadership to strengthen clinical skills, employee development, patient care, and operational excellence.
In Your Day-to-Day You Will
Lead Veterinary Training & Development
  • Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of comprehensive training programs for veterinary support staff across all AVECCC locations
  • Assess training needs and create programs that address clinical, operational, and professional development goals
  • Build structured training pathways for Technicians Levels 1-3, Technician Assistants, Kennel Assistants, Lab Technicians, Doctor's Assistants, and Front Office staff
  • Develop training using multiple methods, including classroom instruction, simulation, mentoring, on-the-job training, and hands-on clinical education
  • Participate in and lead new hire orientation, onboarding, skills training, and recurring competency refreshers
  • Shadow and train new hires, trainers, and team members on the hospital floor for a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • Assign trainers and mentors to new employees based on position and training needs
  • Facilitate regular Train the Trainer sessions to ensure consistent training standards
  • Communicate new hire progress and training outcomes to appropriate hospital and leadership teams

Develop AVECCC Academy
  • Lead the continued development and implementation of AVECCC Academy
  • Plan and coordinate lectures, courses, workshops, and continuing education opportunities
  • Develop curriculum and instructional materials that support clinical excellence and career advancement
  • Partner with clinical leaders and subject matter experts to ensure training content reflects current veterinary medicine and best practices
  • Facilitate continuing education training as requested by the Leadership Team
  • Help develop educational pathways that support employees pursuing advanced credentials and professional growth

Strengthen Clinical Practice & Patient Care
  • Partner with the Leadership Team and Medical Director to identify opportunities to improve clinical practice, patient safety, and quality of care
  • Develop and update medical standard operating procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with the Medical Director
  • Support nursing and clinical teams in addressing practice trends that vary from established standards or best practices
  • Analyze clinical and operational practices to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice
  • Participate in Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) rounds and help translate lessons learned into training and process improvements
  • Remain current on veterinary research, clinical literature, techniques, and best practices relevant to emergency and critical care

Coach & Develop Veterinary Leaders
  • Provide one-on-one coaching to help employees establish and achieve short- and long-term professional goals
  • Identify individual strengths and development opportunities and create appropriate learning plans
  • Mentor and role-model effective leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic thinking
  • Supervise the Charge Nurse team in collaboration with the Hospital Manager and Hospital Director
  • Support Charge Nurses and other leaders in staff development, performance management, coaching, and employee reviews
  • Participate in talent reviews, succession planning, and career development initiatives
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, accountability, innovation, and professional growth

Measure Training Effectiveness
  • Establish training metrics and evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs
  • Assess the impact of training on employee skills, clinical performance, patient outcomes, retention, and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Collect feedback from trainers and trainees following training sessions
  • Partner with the Leadership Team to review retention trends and modify training programs as needed
  • Manage training resources and budgets to ensure programs are effective and sustainable

Build Partnerships & Support Growth
  • Partner with local veterinary technician schools to develop relationships and educational opportunities
  • Collaborate with veterinary professionals and subject matter experts to strengthen training programs
  • Support employees interested in advancing their veterinary careers and pursuing specialty credentials
  • Help veterinary technicians develop the knowledge and skills necessary for career advancement and specialty certification
  • Promote internal career pathways and employee growth opportunities throughout AVECCC
What We're Looking For
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in the state of Arizona required
  • Experience training, mentoring, or developing veterinary staff
  • Minimum of 1 year of employment with AVECCC preferred, or comparable experience leading veterinary training programs
  • Advanced VTS certification preferred, but not required
  • Strong clinical knowledge and experience in veterinary medicine, preferably Emergency & Critical Care
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective training programs
  • Experience with hands-on clinical training, classroom education, mentoring, or competency assessment
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to coach employees and provide constructive feedback
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to analyze training needs and measure program effectiveness
  • Passion for developing veterinary professionals and improving patient care
  • Positive, approachable, and collaborative leadership style
