Job description

Marine Mammal Veterinary Assistant / Animal Care Manager

Organization: Northcoast Marine Mammal Center (NMMC)

Location: Crescent City, California

Compensation: Pay commensurate with experience, range $20-$23 per hour.

30-40 hours per week. Hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.


The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center’s mission is to rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured, and stranded marine mammals while promoting community engagement and education.


The Veterinary Assistant / Animal Care Manager is responsible for the day-to-day care of all marine mammal patients and supervises the staff, interns, and volunteers who care for them.


Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise animal care volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff.
  • Maintain the animal care schedule.
  • Communicate daily observations, changes, and concerns regarding each patient’s health to the attending veterinarian.
  • Implement all veterinary medical orders and train staff and volunteers to follow instructions accurately.
  • Prepare and perform laboratory analyses and maintain proper sample storage.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date medical charts for all patients.
  • Assist with animal rescue, transport, release, and large-whale entanglement activities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all NMMC policies and procedures, NOAA Marine Fisheries West Coast Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Program, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) protocols, meeting or exceeding established standards.
  • Assist with occasional events and special projects.


Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of veterinary assistant experience.
  • Marine Mammal experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related life science field; marine biology preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to frequently changing conditions, priorities, and work practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask with a can-do attitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
