What is a veterinarian helper?

Veterinarian helpers, also known as veterinary assistants, support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in animal care settings such as clinics, hospitals, and animal shelters. Their duties include feeding and bathing animals, cleaning cages, sterilizing equipment, and assisting with basic animal care procedures. They play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of veterinary facilities by handling routine tasks, allowing veterinarians to focus on medical treatments. Veterinary helpers also interact with pet owners and help maintain records. This entry-level position can be a valuable stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a veterinarian helper and how do they support the veterinary team?

A Veterinarian Helper, often referred to as a veterinary assistant, is responsible for a variety of tasks that keep the clinic running smoothly. Daily duties may include preparing examination rooms, restraining animals during procedures, cleaning cages and equipment, feeding and exercising animals, and assisting veterinarians or technicians with routine care. By handling these essential support tasks, Veterinarian Helpers help ensure that veterinarians and vet techs can focus on medical procedures and client communication. Their teamwork and attention to detail are crucial in maintaining a safe, efficient, and caring environment for both animals and staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a veterinarian helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Veterinarian Helper, you need a basic understanding of animal care, handling techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent, with some employers preferring experience or coursework in animal science. Familiarity with tools such as animal restraint devices, cleaning equipment, and veterinary software is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, compassion for animals, and effective teamwork and communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure the safety of animals and staff, support efficient veterinary operations, and contribute to positive outcomes for pets and their owners.

Job description

Want to Lead a Hospital...Without Giving Up Being a Veterinarian?

Most Medical Director jobs eventually turn into meetings, schedules, budgets, and trying to figure out why the printer isn't working. This isn't one of those jobs.

Channel Islands Veterinary Hospital is looking for a Managing Veterinarian who wants to lead through great medicine—not paperwork.

You'll still practice medicine. You'll mentor doctors. You'll help shape the future of an incredible hospital. We'll handle the operational headaches so you can focus on what actually matters: patients, people, and practicing the kind of medicine that made you become a veterinarian in the first place.

Our team has 172 years of combined tenure. People don't stay somewhere for decades because it's convenient. They stay because they're respected, supported, challenged, and surrounded by teammates they genuinely enjoy working with.

We've been serving Port Hueneme since 1987, and today we're a thriving collaborative 5-doctor practice where generations of families trust us with their pets. We're proud of our medicine, and we're even prouder of our people.

What Your Life Looks Like Here

  • Rotating 4 and 5 day work weeks
  • No Sundays
  • No holidays
  • A schedule that respects your time
  • Dedicated doctor support (approximately one technician, one assistant, and one CSR per doctor)

Lead Medicine. Not Meetings.

We're looking for someone who wants to influence medicine—not spend every day buried in spreadsheets.

You'll:

  • Maintain an active clinical caseload.
  • Mentor and support fellow veterinarians.
  • Help elevate medical standards.
  • Collaborate with an experienced leadership team.
Never been a Medical Director? That’s okay. If you're the doctor others turn to for guidance, enjoy mentoring, and value a positive culture, we'll help you develop the leadership skills needed to thrive as a Managing DVM. With personalized leadership training tailored to your goals, you'll feel confident and equipped to lead your team.

Built for Doctors Who Love Practicing Great Medicine

Our hospital is equipped with:

  • Digital Radiology
  • Dental Radiology
  • New Ultrasound equipment
  • Advanced soft tissue surgery
  • Laser therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Preventive medicine
  • A loyal client base that trusts your recommendations

If you need the right equipment to provide better care, we're the kind of hospital that listens.

You'll Probably Love It Here If...

You're the doctor who:

  • Loves mentoring without making people feel like they're being mentored.
  • Still gets excited about an interesting surgery.
  • Can confidently lead a room while making everyone feel heard.
  • Believes culture matters just as much as medicine.
  • Knows the best hospitals are built by teams—not egos.
  • Can laugh at the occasional "ruff" day joke or cat pun.

Why Port Hueneme, CA?

Enjoy coastal California living while building a rewarding veterinary career. Located near Ventura, Oxnard, and the Channel Islands, with easy access to Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, Port Hueneme offers beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, great food, and a welcoming community.

The Perks

  • Compensation: $150,000–$200,000+ (DOE)
  • Sign-on Bonus: up to $50,000
  • Production opportunities
  • No Negative Accrual
  • Joint Venture Partnership Opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Continuing education support
  • Leadership development
  • A hospital that invests in its doctors instead of asking them to "make do"

What We're Looking For

  • DVM (or equivalent)
  • California veterinary license (or ability to obtain one)
  • ECFVG or PAVE certification if applicable
  • Passion for exceptional medicine and building great teams
  • Strong surgical experience, including advanced soft tissue procedures such as exploratory laparotomies, gastropexies, gastrotomies, pyometra surgeries, urinary obstructions, hernia repairs, enucleations, mastectomies, and similar cases
