Vet Helper information

What is a vet helper?

Vet Helpers, also known as veterinary assistants, are support staff who work alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians in animal clinics, hospitals, and shelters. Their duties often include feeding, bathing, and exercising animals, cleaning cages, sterilizing equipment, and assisting with basic animal care. They play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of veterinary facilities and the well-being of animal patients. Vet Helpers do not diagnose or treat animals but provide essential support so veterinarians and technicians can focus on medical procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vet helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vet Helper, you need a basic understanding of animal care, handling techniques, and often a high school diploma or relevant coursework. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, basic medical tools, and animal restraint equipment is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and compassion for animals are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are important to ensure the safety and well-being of animals, support veterinarians effectively, and provide excellent client service.

What are some common challenges vet helpers face when working in a busy veterinary clinic?

Vet Helpers often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as assisting veterinarians during exams, cleaning and preparing treatment areas, and handling animals who may be stressed or frightened. One of the main challenges is managing time effectively, especially during peak hours when the clinic is busy. Additionally, Vet Helpers need to be comfortable with physically demanding tasks and emotional situations, as they frequently assist with injured or ill animals. Building strong communication skills and teamwork with veterinary staff is essential for providing the best care and maintaining a positive work environment.

What is the difference between Vet Helper vs Veterinary Assistant?

AspectVet HelperVeterinary Assistant
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma; some may pursue certification
Work EnvironmentAnimal clinics, shelters, farmsVeterinary clinics, animal hospitals
Job DutiesAssist with animal care, cleaning, basic support tasksAssist veterinarians with exams, prepare animals and equipment

Vet Helpers and Veterinary Assistants share similar roles in animal care environments, often performing supportive tasks. While Vet Helpers typically require minimal formal training, Veterinary Assistants may pursue certification and have more direct involvement in medical procedures. Both roles are essential in veterinary settings, but Veterinary Assistants usually have a broader scope of responsibilities.

Where do vet helpers make the most money?

Vet helpers tend to earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for veterinary services, such as urban areas or states with a strong veterinary industry. Salaries can also increase with experience, certifications, and working in specialized clinics or emergency hospitals.

Job description

We are currently growing our technical team in preparation for our soon to be expanding veterinarian team and we need to find a diamond in the rough! We need someone who is looking to hone their current areas of skill and expand their knowledge in vet med and leadership. You don't need to a rockstar, but have the aspiration of becoming a shining star within a team of stars. Must be someone with a desire to learn and grow.

Our clinic is an award winning, privately owned, non-corporate practice. We're a paperless rural mixed animal facility with all the bells and whistles expected in a progressive clinic including; a dedicated dental suite with DDXR, full in house and expanding diagnostic lab, separate prep/sterilization room, large animal handling facility and even a snack room stocked with a Nespresso, granola bars, chips and goodies for team use in our office addition and more. Check us out at www.gatewayvet.ca.

We have a lot of experience mentoring and we have an onboarding/training system in place to get you up to speed fast. We've helped over 40 DVM/RVT/VMR students receive their volunteer or practical placements and build their skills in the past 12 years. We're not afraid of training/mentoring and actively invest in our teams and your development, training and mentorship.

Do you have an interest in a specific area of practice? Excellent! We have helped to investigate and can provide ways to grow and train our team in the areas that they want to expand their knowledge and skills. Specialized training programs for dentistry, conferences in Florida, and more. Looking for a possibility of a shorter work week with longer hours? That's possible! Part time? Let's see what we can work out! We're flexible enough to help find ways to meet your needs as well as ours. Family is important and we understand that, so we are willing to work with a family's needs as much as possible. If you are looking for a way to take ownership and responsibility over your job, have the satisfaction of taking some control over how and why you do what you do, and are up for the challenge of working in this nontoxic high paced team, then maybe we're the right place for you.

We pride ourselves in maintaining our nontoxic zone where we focus on hiring for fit and teaching for skill where needed. The practice is structured strongly around the input and responsibility from every level of the team. Our employees rate their job satisfaction high, as we focus on our commitments to animal welfare. The culture embraces respect, responsibility, honesty, personal and professional training and team comradery. We believe in a team that supports each other and the betterment of each person on our team. Team building is something we aren't afraid to invest in and we organize nonwork related events throughout the year to help maintain this environment.

Melfort is big enough to have a Canadian Tire and McDonalds, but small enough to feel safe and familiar. Known as the 'Gateway to the North', we are a short distance from excellent forestry for quadding or sledding, hot spot lakes for fishing or water sports, competitive horse arenas, downhill skiing and so much more. Plus we are an easy drive to 3 major cities for any shopping beyond what is provided locally. Our town has many recreational teams and regular events that you can join to keep active outside of work. We have many ways to be involved locally if that is something important to you.

If you aren't happy at work and are looking to be a part of a team that pushes each other to be the best version of themselves everyday, why stay there when you can be here?! To see if we might be the right fit for you and your future, apply below.

We welcome applicants of all experience levels. Must have graduated or currently attending an accredited Veterinary Technician/Technology program or equivalent, and passed or planning to write the VTNE. Applications will be accepted through this link. We will respond to all applicants. If you have any issues with your resume submission, email vpadmin@gatewayvet.ca for assistance.
