Job description

The Service Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for customers seeking marine repair, maintenance, or parts for their vessels. This position combines customer service, technical knowledge, and administrative skills to facilitate smooth operations within the service department. The advisor works closely with technicians, parts staff, sales staff, and customers to write repair orders, schedule repairs, source components, and provide updates on service progress. A strong understanding of marine systems, such as engines, electrical, and plumbing, along with excellent communication skills is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

  • Greet and assist customers, answering inquiries about marine services, repairs, and parts availability.
  • Assess customer needs by discussing vessel issues and recommending appropriate services or parts.
  • Provide cost estimates for repairs, maintenance, or parts, and explain pricing and timelines.
  • Keep customers informed about the status of their service orders and notify them when the work is complete.

Service Coordination:

  • Write repair orders and schedule service appointments for boat repairs, maintenance, or installations.
  • Act as a liaison between customers and marine technicians, relaying technical details and repair requirements.
  • Prepare and quote work orders with accurate descriptions of customer requests and ensure they are delivered to the service team.
  • Submit and process warranty claims with varied brands.
  • Monitor repair progress and ensure services are completed on time and to customer satisfaction.
  • Partner closely with the Service Manager to ensure repairs are completed accurately and the service department operates efficiently.

Parts Management:

  • Assist customers in identifying and ordering the correct parts for their boats or marine equipment.
  • Check inventory levels, place orders with suppliers, and manage stock to ensure availability of commonly used parts.
  • Verify compatibility of parts with specific vessel make and models (e.g., outboard motors, propellers, bilge pumps).
  • Process parts sales, including invoicing and handling returns or warranties as needed.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records of service orders, parts transactions, and customer interactions.
  • Process payments, issue receipts, and handle billing inquiries.
  • Use service management software or systems to track appointments, inventory, and work progress.
  • Prepare reports on service activity or parts usage for management as required.
  • Technical Support:
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of marine systems, products, and industry trends to assist customers effectively.
  • Offer basic troubleshooting advice to customers over the phone or in person when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with technicians to ensure parts and service recommendations align with repair needs.

Sales and Upselling:

  • Promote additional services, maintenance packages, or accessories that benefit the customer.
  • Educate customers on preventative maintenance to enhance vessel performance and longevity.


Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in customer service, marine service, or parts sales is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with boats or marine equipment. 
  • Basic understanding of marine mechanics (e.g., inboard/outboard engines, electrical systems) or willingness to learn. 
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking abilities. 
  • Proficiency with computers, sales and inventory software. Lightspeed experience preferred. 
  • May require certifications such as manufacturer-specific training or boating industry credentials.
  • Ability to lift moderate loads (e.g., parts or equipment) and work in a shop or dock environment.


Requirements:

  • Current valid driver’s license
  • Clean driving record, no blemishes
  • Experience driving both manual and automatic vehicles.
  • Ability to confidently operate a forklift (training/certification required). Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Boat Safety Certification may be required. Must be 18 years of age or older. 
  • Towing/hauling, launching and retrieving of boats. Must be 18 years of age or older
