Job description

The Record (Bergen County NJ) & NorthJersey.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced and highly skilled vertical video lead.

The ideal candidate will create and develop visual storytelling across multiple platforms, using video to inform, engage and entertain fan bases. The employee will connect with readers through social media, coordinate with internal staff on the best ways to implement vertical video and pursue user-generated content when appropriate. They will be fluent in digital journalism methods, tools, and best practices, with an emphasis on video production on tight deadlines in breaking news and planned coverage situations. 

This position regularly contributes ideas for stories and video that are fresh, compelling, and timely and that will meet audience interests and needs. This person will identify the top video storytelling opportunities each day and ensure the newsroom has the means to capture, produce, distribute and promote that video. Also, takes initiative in creating videos and other multimedia content, and ensures appropriate videos are updated regularly online. 

Candidate must be self-directed and self-motivated, with the ability to handle many wide-ranging duties at the same time. Must have strong planning skills and news judgment, be detail-oriented, and have strong interpersonal and community relation skills. Candidates must be able to accept and use constructive feedback for improvement, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to work nights and weekends or travel as needed. 

Responsibilities:

  • Creates quality multimedia storytelling using videography and text that accurately informs, entertains and engages our audience. Uses audience metrics to assist making coverage decisions. Demonstrates high command of techniques and sophisticated craftsmanship video storytelling and community engagement.
  • Champions vertical video with the newsroom.
  • Collaborates and connects with reporters through visual storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums,       community leadership, etc.).
  • Works with content strategist and audience analyst to evaluate what's working and what's not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Works on special projects and performs editing of visuals when needed.
  • Promotes northjersey.com brands.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions. 

Requirements: 

  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a related field
  • Bachelor’s degree or relative equivalent experience
  • Communication and collaboration with editors, reporters, and colleagues
  • Excellent planning, coordinating and multitasking skills
  • Superior prioritization and flexibility to change when the news or industry demands it
  • Strong idea generation and execution
  • Ability to work on their own and make decisions 

Position Salary range: $65,000 - $73,000

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $53,000. and $82,813. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
