Job description

About Team / Role

WEX Venture Capital is the venture capital arm of WEX, a global leader in intelligent payment and workflow solutions that processes billions in commercial payments annually for businesses of all sizes. We invest in startups leveraging innovative technologies and business models that expand WEX into new markets, while using our scale and expertise to help accelerate their growth. Building upon our success since we launched WEX VC in 2023, we are entering an exciting new phase where we are investing across B2B payments and commercial mobility.

As part of this new chapter, we are growing our team, and seeking a full-time Investor, WEX Venture Capital, either remote or based in our beautiful waterfront office in Portland, Maine. The ideal candidate is highly motivated to explore areas of opportunity, build relationships with key ecosystem players, develop deal flow, and drive due diligence processes, all while being a part of the core team shaping the development of WEX Venture Capital into a best-in-class corporate VC. The role may also offer the opportunity for post-investment monitoring and engagement as observer on the board of directors of WEX Venture Capital portfolio companies. You will contribute significantly to the impact of our fund on WEX, the startup ecosystem, and the evolution of the mobility and fintech industries more broadly.

How you'll make an impact

  • Develop and pursue new investment theses across relevant domains in B2B payments and commercial mobility, and brief senior leaders across WEX on learnings and opportunities

  • Source new investment opportunities that meet our criteria throughout North America, Europe, and Israel. In doing so, update and enrich our evaluation criteria and processes

  • Provide financial and market analysis to lead the development of investment cases, including assessment of the value to WEX through working in close collaboration with WEX's commercial and product teams

  • Lead due diligence efforts for potential investments, covering internal and external subject matter experts in our network

  • Cultivate a close working relationship with senior business stakeholders and P&L owners to share insights from the venture ecosystem that influence WEX strategy

  • Help manage our deal pipeline, screening, and scouting processes, and scale our fund's capabilities by identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Engage with our network of peer investors, representing WEX VC on regular check-ins

  • Represent WEX VC at industry events and conferences, speak about our mission and strategy

  • Where appropriate, represent WEX as a board observer in portfolio company board meetings

  • Develop trusted relationships with portfolio CEOs to help them navigate complex B2B sales and other challenges of scaling a company

Experience you'll bring

  • 10+ years of professional experience with a track record in venture capital, incubation, M&A/Corporate Finance, Business Development or startup management in fintech, mobility, physical industry, and/or software

  • Strong business acumen and executive presence

  • Experience in venture capital or private equity due diligence efforts that culminated in successful investments in the millions of dollars

  • Technical understanding of several sub-sectors within fintech and/or payments, an ability to identify key challenges and opportunities in those areas, and communication skills to present emerging opportunities clearly to a sophisticated audience

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, a network aligned with our field, and the ability to foster collaborative relationships with startup leaders and other external partners

  • The entrepreneurial spirit, sense of ownership, and willingness to take on work outside the core job description that is required to scale a new venture fund into this next phase
