The VDC Manager is a key leadership role within ISAT Total Support, serving as a primary subject matter expert (SME) in virtual design. This position is responsible for establishing and driving the vision, strategy, and operational excellence of the PDX VDC Team. The VDC Manager ensures effective resource allocation, quality control, project execution, team collaboration, and continuous improvement across all VDC disciplines. Additionally, this role leads training and development initiatives, conducts performance evaluations and skill assessments, and fosters mentorship to enhance team capabilities, communication, and project success.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Management

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the PDX VDC Team, ensuring effective workload distribution and resource utilization.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide developmental feedback, and coordinate employee reviews in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Perform regular skill assessments and work alongside Quality Control and department leadership to identify training opportunities for both individuals and teams.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Project Coordination

  • Participate in internal and external project kickoff meetings to establish project objectives, scope, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Review project requirements and communicate any needs for additional information, clarification, or scope development.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure project timelines, workflow expectations, and technical requirements are clearly communicated and achieved.
  • Proactively identify and address project risks, challenges, and resource constraints that may impact project success or the ISAT brand.

Quality Control

  • Oversee quality control processes for all VDC deliverables, including 2D documentation, 3D models, coordination deliverables, shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and other project-specific outputs.
  • Supervise the quality control of VDC ISAT 2D and 3D deliverables, ensuring models are clash-free, constructible, and documentation meets ISAT quality standards by reviewing and approving work before submission.

Financial Oversight

  • Monitor profitability and performance of VDC projects and service offerings.
  • Track internal work orders, labor utilization, productivity metrics, and project budgets.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to identify opportunities for change orders, additional services, and project enhancements.
  • Support strategic planning and resource forecasting to ensure sustainable department growth and profitability.

Quotations and Proposals

  • Collaborate with Sales, Project Management, and Estimating to promote ISAT's VDC services and develop accurate proposals and quotations.
  • Provide scope development, staffing requirements, deliverables, budget estimates, and schedule recommendations for VDC services.
  • Participate in customer discovery meetings and support business development efforts by communicating service capabilities and value propositions.

Training and Development

  • Lead the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of ISAT's VDC workflows, standards, technologies, and best practices.
  • Facilitate employee training, onboarding, mentorship, and professional development programs.
  • Document lessons learned and establish educational resources to support continuous learning and operational excellence.
  • Encourage cross-training and knowledge sharing across disciplines within the VDC Service Group.

Skill Assessments

  • Utilize performance metrics, project outcomes, and training data to conduct ongoing assessments of team capabilities.
  • Identify skills gaps and implement development plans to improve technical and professional competencies.
  • Establish career development paths to support employee growth and succession planning.

Software Expertise

  • Maintain advanced knowledge of VDC software platforms including, but not limited to:
    • Revit
    • ISAT internal Add-ins/Software for Revit
    • Navisworks
    • AutoCAD
    • ACC (Autodesk Construction Cloud)
    • BIM 360
    • Revizto
    • Newforma Konekt
    • Content Catalog
  • Troubleshoot software-related issues and ensure compatibility with established workflows and project requirements.

Model and Data Management

  • Ensure project models, documentation, databases, and supporting files are maintained according to company and/or PDX standards.
  • Enforce naming conventions, file management protocols, and model organization practices.
  • Verify that project parameters, schedules, and documentation standards are consistently applied across all projects.
  • Implement best practices for model optimization, collaboration, and data integrity.

Revit and Navisworks Proficiency

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Revit and Navisworks, including:
    • Family creation and editing
    • Shared and project parameter management
    • Scheduling and reporting
    • Clash detection and coordination
    • Search sets and model reviews
    • Quantity takeoffs
    • Workflow automation and optimization
    • Model auditing and file maintenance

Construction and Design Knowledge

  • Maintain a strong understanding of building systems, construction methodologies, coordination processes, and installation requirements.
  • Ensure design and construction solutions support constructability, fabrication efficiency, installation sequencing, and project objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance for coordination, detailing, prefabrication, and virtual construction initiatives across multiple disciplines.

Fabrication Knowledge

  • Maintain knowledge of fabrication processes, prefabrication workflows, and off-site manufacturing (OSM) practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and streamline fabrication and installation activities.
  • Support innovation and continuous improvement initiatives related to fabrication-driven design.

Contract and Code Knowledge

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of project contracts, specifications, design criteria, building codes, industry standards, and client requirements.
  • Ensure VDC deliverables comply with contractual obligations, project standards, and applicable codes.
  • Support value engineering, constructability reviews, and technical resolution of project challenges.

NEXUS Proficiency

  • Utilize Nexus for timekeeping efficiency and manage team billable % to ensure workload optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience with increasing responsibility for project components related to BIM. Five (5) or more years of experience in a similar role within the construction or engineering industry is preferred.
  • Expertise in BIM tools and applications related to cost, scheduling, estimating, design, and coordination.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical material effectively.
  • High level of attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy and quality, and a critical eye for design.
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills, and proficiency with BIM computer applications such as Revit and Navisworks.
  • Experience in conducting skill assessments, providing training, and managing performance reviews
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project contract documents & specifications.
