We are currently looking for two skilled Radiation Oncology Therapists to become part of our Radiation Medicine team at Lowell General Hospital!

Position Overview

In this role, the radiation therapist will administer ionizing radiation to patients, following the prescriptions and guidelines provided by the radiation oncologist, while adhering to established standards in radiation therapy technology.

  • Hours: 40 hours per week / Day Shift (Monday - Friday)
  • Location: Lowell General Hospital - 295 Varnum Avenue - Lowell, MA
  • Openings: 2 full-time positions available
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Radiologic Science.
  • Certification in Radiation Therapy from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • At least one year of experience in radiation therapy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in radiation therapy.
Key Responsibilities

The following duties outline the general nature of the work involved and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed:

  • Administer the prescribed therapy accurately with minimal oversight.
  • Verify prescriptions, consent forms, diagnoses, patient identification, and treatment schedules before administering doses.
  • Communicate procedures to patients to ease their concerns.
  • Reinforce the radiation oncologist’s guidance regarding treatment reactions and care.
  • Monitor patients for any adverse reactions to radiation treatment and report findings to the radiation oncologist or nursing staff.
  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment according to prescriptions, including immobilization devices and positioning.
  • Assist patients in moving to and from treatment areas.
  • Safely transfer patients from stretchers and wheelchairs to treatment couches, using proper body mechanics.
  • Continuously monitor patients during treatment and simulation, ready to halt treatment and assist if necessary.
  • Support simulations with the radiation oncologist.
  • Assist with dosimetry tasks, including calculations and contours.
  • Participate in patient chart conferences.
  • Conduct daily physics checks on all equipment to identify any malfunctions and report findings.
  • Maintain accurate records of treatments, doses, and any port films in patient charts.
  • Utilize the IMPAC computer system for scheduling and charge capture.
  • Perform minor clerical tasks such as answering phones and scheduling appointments.
  • Take weekly port films as per established protocols.
  • Ensure the therapy department is clean and organized, particularly patient areas.
  • Monitor accessory equipment for malfunctions and notify appropriate personnel for repairs.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking, and lifting of 30-35 lbs.
  • Ability to push, pull, and move stretchers and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for operating diagnostic equipment and computers.
  • Good hearing and vision to perform examinations and monitor patients.
  • Close contact with patients who may have contagious diseases.
  • Exposure to radiation during patient treatment.
  • Regular interactions with patients, physicians, and hospital staff.
