Description:

Our cardiovascular surgery team performs a high number of coronary bypass surgeries every year to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). We are leaders in this procedure and other techniques that provide life-altering results.

At Trinity Oakland's cardiovascular surgery department, we are:

  • Innovative: We're one of the only programs in the Midwest to use the da Vinci® robotic surgery system for both coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve repair.

  • Experienced: We perform one of the highest volumes of complex aortic surgeries in all of Michigan.

  • Collaborative: Our heart surgeons and cardiologists work side-by-side in our hybrid ORs to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures.

  • Advanced: We're one of the only programs in Michigan to offer the latest Ross procedure for aortic valve replacement.

  • Successful: As leaders in cardiovascular surgery, we exceed national safety measures, with excellent outcomes and low complication rates.

  • Patient-centered: We do more TAVR procedures using conscious sedation than any program in the state, meaning fewer complications and a shorter recovery for you.

  • Compassionate: You'll receive care from a team of dedicated nurse navigators, cardiologists and surgeons. We make sure you're informed and comfortable before, during and after your procedure.

Job Details:

Prepares and records patient history, assists in surgery and formulates post-surgical treatment plans for patient under the direction of the surgeon. Participates in the management of patient care by facilitating, expediting and coordinating surgical procedures, writing orders for appropriate medical care and determining the need for consultation to provide continuity of care. Accountable to the Director of Surgical Services and the Chairman of Cardiovascular Surgery.

Education, Licensure / Certification:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program with a Bachelor of Science including six (6) to twelve (12) months of clinical internship.

  • Licensed to practice in the State of Michigan as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

  • Current BCLS and ACLS certification.

Experience :

  • At least three years of clinical working experience as a P.A. Cardio Thoracic Surgery highly desired, in order to exercise independent judgement to monitor and respond to changes in patient conditions as well as perform effectively in stressful and/or emergent situations.

  • Analytical ability to monitor data, develop treatment plans and prescribe medication.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients, family members and the health care team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as first and second surgical assistant in performing specific medical procedures during cardiac surgery and/or related thoracic and vascular procedures.

  • Performs, documents and dictates complete medical history and physical examinations on cardio-thoracic patients.

  • Performs rounds daily on all patients, participates in multidisciplinary rounds and performs technical duties on the floor as requested by the attending physician and/or surgeon.

  • Prepares and initiates pre- and post-operative orders in consultation with the attending physician and/or surgeon.

  • Participates in patient care before and after surgery and discusses findings/evaluation with attending physician and/or surgeon.

  • Participates in the education of the patient and family on diagnosis, desired results of surgery and the expectations during hospitalization and recovery.

  • Prepares discharge summaries and assigned to facilitate the management of information for the continuum of care.

  • Anticipates and responds to the needs of others, provides assistance, treats others with care and respect while maintaining privacy, confidentiality and dignity.

  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.

  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.

  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift.
