Position Summary:
The Senior Director, PDS (Product Development & Supply) Business System & Capabilities, will lead the design, deployment, governance, and continuous evolution of COMPASS as the PDS Business & Production System. This leader will serve as an executive-facing thought partner to PDS leadership team, site leaders, functional leaders, and transformation partners to translate strategy into a scalable operating system that improves quality, service, cost, productivity, supply reliability, and colleague engagement.
The role will lead the COMPASS Site Implementation and Capability team and establish the standards, maturity model, deployment roadmap, governance cadence, and capability-building approach required to embed COMPASS as how PDS works. The Senior Director will ensure COMPASS is not deployed as a set of disconnected tools, but as an integrated, digitally enabled management system that connects strategy deployment, tier management, leader standard work, visual management, value stream management, problem solving, continuous improvement, and high-performing teams.
This role will initially support priority deployment choices across Manati, Devens, and broader PDS sites/functions, while building the repeatable model required for network scale-up. The leader will be accountable for stakeholder enrollment, change management, value realization, capability development, and sustained adoption across a complex, matrixed, multi-site organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Business System Strategy & Ownership
- Lead the enterprise design, governance, deployment, and continuous evolution of COMPASS as the PDS Business & Production System across sites and functions.
- Define the multi-year COMPASS strategy, deployment roadmap, operating model, maturity model, standards, playbooks, stage gates, and scale-up approach.
- Ensure COMPASS operates as an integrated management system that connects strategy deployment, tier management, leader standard work, visual management, KPI management, value stream performance, problem solving, and continuous improvement.
Executive Partnership & Governance
- Partner directly with PDS LT / SVP-level stakeholders to shape deployment choices, value cases, sequencing, executive decisions, and communication of the transformation agenda.
- Establish the governance cadence required to track adoption, value realization, risks, decisions, and executive-level escalations.
- Develop executive-ready materials, recommendations, updates, and decision narratives for PDS LT, steering teams, site leadership, and functional stakeholders.
Deployment, Capability Building & Adoption
- Lead the COMPASS Site Implementation and Capability team, including SMEs, coaches, deployment leads, and transformation partners.
- Build and deploy capability-building programs, communities of practice, maturity assessments, training curricula, coaching routines, and knowledge-sharing mechanisms to sustain adoption.
- Champion stakeholder enrollment and change management so COMPASS is co-developed with sites/functions and adopted as a practical way of working, not an above-site program.
- Facilitate workshops, training sessions, Gemba-based coaching, Kaizen events, and leadership alignment sessions to build COMPASS capabilities and drive improvement initiatives.
Performance, Value Realization & Continuous Improvement
- Translate business priorities into measurable improvement outcomes across safety, quality, service, cost, productivity, supply reliability, cycle time, and colleague engagement.
- Establish and monitor KPIs, maturity metrics, adoption measures, and benefits-realization mechanisms to measure the impact of COMPASS initiatives.
- Lead the identification, prioritization, execution, and sustainment of high-impact improvement opportunities across sites and functions.
- Use data, trend analysis, benchmarking, and structured problem solving to identify improvement priorities and inform strategic resource decisions.
Digital, Data & AI Enablement
- Drive integration of COMPASS with digitally enabled end-to-end process transformation, data standards, performance dashboards, and AI-enabled productivity opportunities.
- Partner with Digital/BI&T, Finance, Quality, Supply Chain, Technical Operations, HR, and site teams to ensure digital investments are aligned with business outcomes and adoption readiness.
- Identify opportunities to use analytics, process mining, digital visual management, workflow automation, and AI-enabled tools to strengthen performance management and accelerate value realization.
Cross-Functional Leadership & External Benchmarking
- Lead cross-functional deployment across manufacturing, quality, supply chain, technical operations, digital/BI&T, HR, finance, and above-site functions.
- Partner with internal and external transformation experts to benchmark production systems, codify best practices, and adapt them to the PDS environment.
- Manage resources, priorities, risks, and dependencies to support successful implementation of COMPASS projects on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Build, lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team, including hiring, organizational design, annual objectives, development planning, and performance management.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Operations Management, Life Sciences, Supply Chain, or related field.
- 12+ years of experience in operational excellence, business excellence, production systems, transformation, manufacturing excellence, continuous improvement, or related roles.
- 7+ years of leadership experience, including direct people leadership and/or leadership of cross-functional transformation teams.
- Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, or scaling an operating system, business system, production system, or enterprise-wide operational excellence model in a complex, multi-site environment.
- Strong executive presence with demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders, align diverse stakeholders, and communicate complex transformation choices clearly.
- Deep knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, strategy deployment/Hoshin Kanri, tier management, visual management, leader standard work, value stream management, standardized work, problem solving, and continuous improvement.
- Experience establishing governance, KPIs, maturity assessments, standards, playbooks, capability-building programs, and value-realization mechanisms.
- Proven ability to lead change management and cultural adoption in a matrixed, global, regulated, or technically complex environment.
- Strong analytical and business acumen, including ability to connect operational improvements to measurable business outcomes and resource decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to build and develop high-performing teams, including organization design, annual objectives, coaching, and performance management.
- Master's degree, MBA, or advanced technical degree.
- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification.
- Experience in pharmaceutical, biologics, cell therapy, medical device, or other regulated manufacturing environments.
- Experience interacting with SVP-level / enterprise leadership teams and preparing executive-ready transformation recommendations.
- Experience with production system benchmark design or deployment, such as Toyota Production System-inspired models, integrated business systems, or advanced production systems.
- Digital and AI literacy, including experience applying data analytics, digital performance management, process mining, workflow automation, digital visual management, AI-enabled productivity tools, or digitally enabled operating systems to improve business outcomes.
- Familiarity with digital transformation, data standards, dashboarding, process/task mining, automation, AI use-case identification, and responsible AI adoption in operational settings.
- Change management certification or experience with structured change/adoption methodologies.
- Experience working with external consulting partners while maintaining internal ownership and leadership of transformation outcomes.
