Job description

Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc., (SGA), is searching for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer for an opportunity with one of our premier clients in Oshkosh, WI.
Position Summary
The Principal Engineer - Mechanical serves as a senior technical leader responsible for the engineering analysis, design, re-design, validation, integration, and troubleshooting of complex mechanical components and subsystems for heavy-duty vehicles.
This role provides technical leadership throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept and engineering analysis through design, validation, vehicle integration, production support, and continuous improvement. The Principal Engineer is expected to independently address complex engineering challenges, establish technical approaches, and ensure solutions meet requirements for performance, safety, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and vehicle integration.
The Principal Engineer also provides technical mentorship to engineers and other team members, develops engineering methodologies and best practices, and serves as a key technical resource to cross-functional teams, suppliers, and potentially external customers or industry organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Mechanical Engineering & Design
  • Perform high-level engineering analysis, design, re-design, validation, and troubleshooting of complex mechanical components and subsystems for heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Lead the development and integration of new and modified mechanical components into existing and new vehicle platforms.
  • Apply advanced engineering principles to evaluate complex mechanical systems and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Perform complex engineering calculations, modeling, investigations, and technical analyses in accordance with company and industry engineering standards.
  • Evaluate designs for performance, safety, reliability, durability, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support the selection and development of parts, components, materials, and systems that meet defined engineering and vehicle requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing designs, engineering processes, system performance, and product reliability.
  • Provide technical direction for complex design and engineering challenges.
Vehicle & Component Integration
  • Provide technical leadership for the integration and execution of vehicle and component design activities.
  • Evaluate interactions between mechanical systems and other vehicle systems to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Support vehicle-level design decisions and ensure component designs satisfy overall vehicle requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, engineering reviews, validation activities, and technical problem-solving sessions.
  • Lead or support validation activities to verify that designs meet engineering and project requirements.
  • Investigate complex design and performance issues identified during development, testing, production, or field operation.
Technical Project Leadership
  • Take ownership for completion of assigned projects or major portions of projects of moderate complexity.
  • Establish technical approaches, project objectives, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Communicate project objectives and technical expectations to project team members.
  • May be responsible for overall project schedules, budgets, resource requirements, and technical deliverables.
  • Manage multiple priorities while maintaining focus on technical quality, project timing, and business objectives.
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Provide regular project and technical status updates to engineering leadership and stakeholders.
  • Participate in budgeting activities, including recommendations for capital improvements and preparation of technical justification data.
Engineering Standards & Methodology
  • Research, develop, maintain, and improve engineering methodologies, standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Establish and promote consistent approaches to engineering analysis, design, validation, and documentation.
  • Ensure proper application of engineering criteria, drawing standards, design practices, and company procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, tools, methodologies, and technical capabilities.
  • Document engineering analysis, technical decisions, research, validation results, and historical information for future programs and designs.
