Job description


Assists in supervising and coordinating activities for the day-to-day activities and operations of the Security Department at Connecticut Children's. Supervises the security personnel to assure prompt response to requests for security, safety and related services for staff, patients and visitors. Ensures a highly quality of service is provided by the Security department to Connecticut Children's patients, families, staff and visitors. Responds to and provides leadership to security personnel during emergency situations, initiate and conclude patient watches and restraints. Assists Security Manager in overseeing all aspects of security
activities of the institution and surrounding neighborhood assuring safety of patients, employees, visitors, and property through vigilant adherence to policy and controls. Position reports to the Security Manager.
Responsibilities
Day-To-Day Operations - Monitors security calls and responds with Security Officers. Reviews all security reports recorded by Security Officers; conducts preliminary investigations for Security Manager and reports back appropriate information. Attends and conducts monthly meetings with Security Officers and Visitor Access Associates (VAAs). Patrols building and grounds, reports suspicious activities and safety concerns. Responds to Security and Valet complaints and conducts preliminary investigations. Conducts off-site visits weekly to have a security presence and field security concerns and safety issues. Coordinates team efforts between Security and VAA staff. Escorts/assists law enforcement agents to Units to coordinate
investigations.
Visitor Access Associates Staff- Ensures adequate staffing levels are maintained for day-to-day operations for Visitor Access Associates. Prepares monthly schedule for VAA staff. Supports VAA staff when the lobby is filled and operates third Easy Lobby workstation for visitor management. Fields customer complaints from Welcome Desk and assists with coordinating for service recovery strategies. Oversees Valet operation and reports any deficiencies. Attend weekly team meetings with Security Manager, Valet Manager, and Hartford Hospital Security Manager. Attends quarterly Visitor Task Force meeting to have first-hand knowledge of complaints, protocol and policies discussed.
Department Leadership- Assists the Security Manager in supervising and coordinating the day-to-day activities and operations of the Security Officers and Visitor Access Associates staff. Facilitates teamwork and cooperation among staff, effectively follows up and resolves routine employee relations issues, seeking support from Security Manager with more complex issues. Participates in the selection, hiring and orientation process for staff; provides day to day guidance in performance of primary job functions and provides appropriate feedback and coaching. Identifies equipment, supplies and services issues, communicates with appropriate personnel and follows through to resolve resource issues. Participates in a variety of administrative managerial activities such as the development, implementation, and enforcement of unit policies and procedures; follows up on incident reports; and maintains appropriate department files.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Responsible for supervising all aspects of the Security Management Program and personnel.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
  • High School Diploma required or equivalent.
  • Associates Degree in Business Management, Criminal Justice or Emergency Management preferred.
  • Three to five years of security management experience preferred.
  • Healthcare security preferred.

License and/or Certification Required:
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Valid State of CT Guard Card upon hiring or able to obtain one within the first 3 months of employment.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification to be obtained within the first 3 months of employment and maintained thereafter

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of hospital/departmental emergency procedures for fire, safety, disaster, electrical safety,
    infection control, and hazardous/toxic materials helpful.
  • Organization policies and procedures.
  • Security Management

Skills:
  • Must have excellent Customer Service skills and telephone etiquette.
  • Strong customer service orientation.

Ability to:
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner to the medical community and hospital
    staff.
