What are VA disability benefits?

VA Disability benefits are financial payments and healthcare services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to veterans who have disabilities that were caused or worsened by their military service. These benefits are meant to compensate for the loss of earning capacity due to service-connected injuries or illnesses. The amount of compensation depends on the severity of the disability, which is determined by a rating system. Veterans may also receive additional benefits for dependents, housing, and education based on their disability status.

What are some common challenges VA Disability Claims Specialists face when assisting veterans with their claims?

VA Disability Claims Specialists often navigate complex regulations and documentation requirements when helping veterans file for benefits. One common challenge is ensuring all necessary medical evidence and service records are gathered and accurately presented, as even small errors can delay or impact the outcome of a claim. Additionally, specialists must stay up-to-date with evolving VA policies and communicate clearly with both veterans and other stakeholders to manage expectations and address concerns. Collaborative teamwork and strong organizational skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VA Disability Claims Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VA Disability Claims Specialist, you need a thorough understanding of veterans’ benefits regulations, claims processing procedures, and case management, typically supported by experience in veterans’ services or a related field. Familiarity with VA claims management software, federal documentation systems, and relevant certifications such as Accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO) status are commonly required. Outstanding attention to detail, empathy, and strong communication skills help in effectively advocating for veterans and guiding them through complex processes. These skills ensure accurate, timely claims resolutions and provide crucial support to veterans seeking their entitled benefits.

Job description

Description
Physician Assistant - Veteran Disability Assessments (Part-Time, No On-Call)
Panama City, FL 2 Days/Week 8:00 AM-4:30 PM
Tired of chasing prior auths and squeezing in a full patient panel between callbacks? This role offers something different: a focused, evaluation-based position where your clinical judgment is the job - not just part of it.
The IMA Group is hiring a Physician Assistant to conduct independent medical evaluations for Veterans pursuing disability benefits tied to service-connected conditions. You'll bring your diagnostic skills to a structured, assessment-only environment - no ongoing management, no treatment plans, no after-hours pages.
Core Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed physical exams and gather medical histories
  • Analyze medical records, imaging, and diagnostic results
  • Apply VA disability evaluation standards to your findings
  • Draft objective, well-supported reports linking conditions to military service
  • Submit documentation through our digital case platform

Qualifications
  • Active, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in Florida
  • Graduate of an accredited PA program
  • NCCPA certification in good standing
  • Solid clinical background with strong diagnostic reasoning
  • Experience in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Occupational Health, Orthopedics, or PM&R is a plus

The IMA Group Difference
  • Steady, predictable 2-day schedule
  • Daytime hours only - 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • No on-call rotation
  • No patient panel or continuity-of-care burden
  • Work centered entirely on evaluation and clinical documentation
  • 401(k) with company match

Bring your PA training to a role built around what you trained for: sound clinical judgment, not paperwork chasing or after-hours interruptions. Apply now.
The IMA Group is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer
Our Government Services Division supports local, state, and federal agencies and delivers professional and objective medical and psychological examinations as well as ancillary services. Our Payer Services Division meets the evaluation and screening needs of Carriers, TPAs, Public Entities and Employers and includes behavioral health and physical medicine specialty services, working with a wide range of organizations within the workers' compensation, disability, liability, and auto markets.
