Job description

About Us

Marketing plays a key role in extending the journalistic legacy and mission of The Times into the future. Our job is to answer the question: "Why is quality journalism worth paying for?" We create award-winning marketing that builds awareness of our brand and affinity for the breadth of our journalistic offering. Above all, we strive to be timely, straightforward and relevant in our marketing - illustrating in new and creative ways how The New York Times can enrich the lives of our readers.

About The Role

In an ongoing effort to create new and elevated product experiences, we're looking for a Senior Manager, UX Writing to concept, develop and execute UX writing across The New York Times portfolio, including our core news product and Games, Cooking, Wirecutter and The Athletic.

You will write crisp, clear and engaging copy for customer journeys, partnering with product, design, marketing, engineering, research and editorial teams to create experiences that grow, engage and retain subscribers. You will also manage a small team of freelance UX writers, coordinating resources, assigning projects and developing practical standards and workflows.

We're looking for candidates who can balance the clarity that UX copy demands with the personality and approachability of an engaging brand. We will look to you to help create solutions that inspire and excite others, then present them effectively and enthusiastically. This is a hybrid role based in our New York headquarters, reporting to the Associate Creative Director, Writing. You can typically expect to be in the office 3 days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Write clear, accurate and compelling user-interface copy for experiences on nytimes.com, in The New York Times app and more.
  • Manage inbound UX writing requests, prioritizing tasks and assigning overflow projects as needed.
  • Maintain quality and consistency across projects and teams, acting as a brand voice steward to ensure all UX copy meets brand, newsroom and product style guidelines and lives up to the journalism itself.
  • Expertly apply brand voice in wayfinding moments, enhancements, paywalls and payflows, plus new tools and features, adjusting tone as appropriate. Touch points might include push notifications, tooltips, light boxes, bottom sheets, screens for new flows and more.
  • Mentor in-house writers and manage a small team of freelance UX writers.
  • Consider problems from multiple angles while aligning work with overarching business and engagement goals.
  • Use insights, data and strategy to influence product copy.
  • Collaborate with designers, prototypers, marketers and more to create compelling UX solutions.
  • Communicate the strategic intent of your work in meetings, presenting rationale to a broad group of partners, including leadership.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience writing for product, brand and UX across multiple products, teams or surfaces.
  • Experience managing or functionally leading writers.
  • A portfolio that shows ideas expressed clearly across a range of touchpoints.
  • The ability to write clear, succinct and engaging copy while writing for small spaces.
  • The ability to collaborate with multiple partners and adjust copy based on data and input from others.
  • Fluent in branding and UX theory and practice.
  • Proficiency using Figma.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A love of writing and storytelling, with the ability to apply it to systemic thinking.
  • Curiosity about every piece of the customer journey.
  • A belief in the value of journalism to people and society, and genuine curiosity about our work and company. We hope you enjoy reading, watching and listening to New York Times journalism and products.
