What is a UX software engineer?

A UX Software Engineer is a professional who combines expertise in user experience (UX) design with software engineering skills to create applications that are both functional and user-friendly. They focus on understanding user needs and behaviors to inform the design and development of software interfaces. This role often involves collaborating with designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that products are intuitive, accessible, and meet both user and business goals. UX Software Engineers may also conduct user research, create prototypes, and test usability to continually improve the user experience.

How do UX software engineers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the development process?

UX Software Engineers work closely with designers to translate user interface mockups into functional, interactive experiences, ensuring that the final product aligns with user needs and design specifications. They also partner with product managers to understand feature priorities and user stories, providing technical insights and feedback on feasibility and implementation timelines. This collaboration often involves regular meetings, design reviews, and iterative feedback sessions to ensure a seamless user experience from concept to deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX software engineer, and why are they important?

Thriving as a UX Software Engineer requires expertise in user experience design principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of human-computer interaction, typically backed by a degree in computer science, design, or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Sketch, coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and version control systems like Git is essential. Outstanding collaboration, creativity, and user empathy are the soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure that products are both technically sound and intuitively usable, resulting in engaging and effective user experiences.

Job description

Santa Clara, California, United States Machine Learning and AI

We’re a small team at Apple betting on what comes next. We believe AI will fundamentally change how people interact with their devices — and we’re looking for software engineers who want to build that future. We can’t say much about what we’re building for our customers. What we can say: the problems are genuinely new and the potential reach is enormous. Beyond the work, we’re a collaborative, humble, and curious group that loves learning from each other and building together.

Description

You’ll work alongside a tight group of engineers, designers, and researchers to bring AI features from early prototype to product. This is 0-to-1 work — from a rough idea on a whiteboard to software running on real devices. You’ll have a lot of autonomy in how you get there. You’ll grow here. The work is hard enough to demand it and the team is generous enough to support it.

Responsibilities
  • Designing and building iOS-based software that re-imagines and creates new Apple experiences using AI
  • Prototyping rapidly to explore what works — then making it real
  • Partnering closely with Design, Machine Learning, and other teams to shape features, not just implement specs
  • Contributing to architecture decisions, absorbing how senior engineers think, and growing your technical voice
  • Investing in the quality and reliability of what you ship — through testing, tooling, and infrastructure that gives the team confidence
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of mobile or application development experience, strong CS fundamentals, iOS and Swift experience is a plus — but if you’re strong in another platform, you’ll pick it up here.
  • You’ve shipped software that people used — and you’re ready to own bigger pieces end-to-end
  • You’ve built something from scratch — a side project, hackathon, or an app you shipped on your own. You know what it takes to go from zero to something real
  • You figure things out. When you’re stuck, you dig in — reading the source, building a prototype, or asking the right questions
  • Comfortable with ambiguity — you may not have all the answers yet, but you know how to find them
  • You work well with others and communicate clearly across teams
  • You’re curious about AI tools and you are already experimenting with how they change the way you write code
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for human-AI interaction
  • Experience in one or more iOS/macOS domains: system services, UI frameworks, concurrent application architecture, or performance optimization
  • You seek out feedback and learn fast from the people around you
  • Close to the frontier. You’re the person your friends come to when a new model drops or a new technique emerges
  • A point of view on where human-AI interaction is headed — and the drive to be part of building it
