What is a UX engineer?

UX Engineers are professionals who bridge the gap between design and development by translating user experience (UX) designs into functional, interactive digital interfaces. They work closely with designers to understand user needs and with developers to implement solutions, often using front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. UX Engineers ensure that products are not only visually appealing but also intuitive and accessible for users. Their role is crucial in creating seamless user experiences by combining technical skills with a deep understanding of design principles.

What does a UX engineer do?

The job duties of a UX engineer involve working to design the user experience for websites, software, interactive devices, and a variety of other computer products. In this career, your duties include using computer code and design strategies to build the customer-facing portion of a website or other interactive system. Your responsibilities include working to identify the needs of users and then trying to implement a design strategy that meets those needs. You may also test your user interface and modify to meet the needs of users or the technical specifications of your employer or client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Engineer, you need a strong grasp of user experience principles, front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and a relevant degree in design, human-computer interaction, or computer science. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Sketch, prototyping software, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Excellent collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help you translate complex requirements into user-friendly interfaces. These capabilities are critical for creating intuitive digital products that balance technical feasibility with superior user experiences.

How does a UX engineer typically collaborate with designers and developers within a product team?

A UX Engineer acts as a bridge between design and development, working closely with UX/UI designers to translate visual concepts into interactive, functional interfaces. They often participate in design reviews, provide technical feedback, and ensure that user experience goals are met through code. Regular communication with front-end and back-end developers is also crucial to ensure seamless integration of design and functionality. This collaborative approach helps to maintain consistency, usability, and performance across digital products.

What is the difference between Ux Engineer vs Ux Designer?

AspectUx EngineerUx Designer
Primary FocusImplementing and coding user experience designs, ensuring functionality and usabilityCreating user interfaces, wireframes, and visual design elements
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in front-end development, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, UX principlesDesign tools (Sketch, Figma), UX research, visual design skills
Work EnvironmentCollaborates closely with developers and product teams in tech-driven companiesWorks with designers, product managers, and stakeholders on design concepts

While both roles focus on user experience, Ux Engineers primarily handle the technical implementation and coding of designs, ensuring they work seamlessly. Ux Designers concentrate on creating the visual and interaction design, focusing on user research and aesthetics. Both roles are essential in the product development process and often collaborate to deliver a cohesive user experience.

How much do UX engineers make?

UX engineers typically earn a median salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in design tools and front-end development can command higher salaries. Entry-level positions generally start around $60,000 to $80,000.

Is UX engineer a stressful job?

A UX engineer's role involves designing and improving user interfaces, which can be demanding due to project deadlines, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and the need for continuous learning of new tools and technologies. While some may find the work stressful during high-pressure periods, many professionals find it rewarding and manageable with good time management and communication skills.

Senior UX/UI Designer

Job description

Requisition ID: 265906ย
Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

The Senior UI/UX Engineer will design and build an exceptional internal developer experience by executing a consolidated Internal Developer Portal on Backstage. This role blends user experience (UX) leadership with hands-on UI engineering to integrate multiple existing portals and developer tools into a single, consistent "control pane" for engineering teams. By unifying workflows, discovery, and self-service experiences across the software delivery lifecycle, the role will measurably reduce friction for developers, improve onboarding, and accelerate product delivery at scale.
Reporting to the Director & Head, Developer Enablement, the Senior UI/UX Engineer will partner closely with platform engineering, developer productivity, and tool owners to translate developer needs into intuitive journeys, scalable interaction patterns, and high-quality Backstage user interfaces and plugins. The focus is pragmatic and outcome-driven: build a portal that is simple, reliable, and "good enough" to meaningfully improve productivity, while establishing a strong foundation for iterative enhancement and expanded capabilities over time.ย

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Lead discovery and UX design for an Internal Developer Portal, translating developer needs into clear user journeys, information architecture, and prioritized experiences.
  • Engineer and deliver Backstage frontend capabilities (pages, components, and plugins) using modern web engineering practices (e.g., React, TypeScript), ensuring a consistent and maintainable experience.
  • Integrate and consolidate multiple existing portals and developer experiences into a unified Backstage platform, harmonizing navigation, design patterns, and interaction standards.
  • Partner with Developer Productivity and Analytics tool owners to surface actionable insights, status, and operational signals within the portal in a way that is intuitive and decision-supportive.
  • Establish and evolve a lightweight design system for the portal, including reusable UI components, accessibility-aware patterns, and documented standards that support scale and speed.
  • Conduct iterative user validation (e.g., interviews, usability testing, and lightweight analytics) and drive continuous improvements based on evidence and feedback.
  • Collaborate with backend/platform engineers to define integration patterns, APIs, and data contracts that support responsive, reliable, and secure user experiences.
  • Ensure high-quality delivery through strong engineering discipline: code quality, performance considerations, testing strategy, documentation, and operational readiness.
  • Influence the broader Developer Enablement strategy by identifying experience gaps, proposing pragmatic solutions, and helping define a roadmap that improves developer self-service and reduces cognitive load.
  • Contribute to a high-performing team culture through mentoring, design and code reviews, and sharing best practices (without direct people management responsibilities).

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 7+ years of combined experience in UI engineering and UX design for complex web applications, platforms, or internal tooling.
  • Demonstrated experience building internal developer platforms/portals, engineering enablement products, or workflow-driven enterprise applications.
  • Strong proficiency with modern frontend engineering (React, TypeScript, HTML/CSS), component design, and state management patterns.
  • Experience with design systems and scalable UI patterns; familiarity with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design.
  • Comfort working across ambiguous problem spaces, balancing pragmatic delivery with user-centered design, and influencing stakeholders through clear communication.
  • Experience collaborating with platform, DevOps, or SRE teams and integrating with developer tools (CI/CD, observability, service catalogs, documentation).

What's in it for you?
