What is UX design?

UX design, or User Experience design, is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves designing the entire process of acquiring and integrating a product, including aspects of branding, usability, function, and design. UX designers focus on understanding the user's needs, behaviors, and pain points to ensure that the product is easy to use and addresses the user's problems effectively. The goal is to enhance user satisfaction by improving the usability and accessibility of a product.

How does a UX designer typically collaborate with developers and product managers during a project?

UX Designers work closely with developers and product managers throughout the product lifecycle. During early stages, they participate in brainstorming sessions and workshops to define user needs and project goals. As the project progresses, UX Designers create wireframes, prototypes, and user flows, and regularly meet with developers to ensure their designs are technically feasible. They also collaborate with product managers to align design decisions with business objectives and user feedback, making communication and flexibility key aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Designer, you need a strong understanding of user-centered design, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, typically supported by a degree in design or related fields. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and familiarity with user research methods are commonly required. Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help UX Designers collaborate effectively and advocate for user needs. These competencies are crucial for creating intuitive, engaging digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

While both Ux Design and UI Design are essential for creating effective digital products, Ux Design primarily focuses on the overall user experience, usability, and research, whereas UI Design concentrates on the visual aspects and interface layout. They often work together but have distinct roles in the product development process.

Are UX Design jobs still in demand?

UX Design jobs remain in high demand as companies prioritize user experience to stay competitive, with skills in user research, wireframing, and proficiency in tools like Figma or Adobe XD highly valued. The role often requires collaboration with developers and product teams, and job growth is expected to continue as digital products expand across industries.

What work does a UX designer do?

A UX designer focuses on improving user experience by researching user needs, designing intuitive interfaces, and testing prototypes to ensure usability. They use tools like wireframes and user flows and often collaborate with developers and product teams to create user-centered digital products.

Ancestry encourages applications from minorities, women, the disabled, protected veterans and all other qualified applicants. Passionate about dedicating your work to enriching people’s lives? Join the curious.

You will be responsible for infusing genetic genealogy into our features by partnering with engineering and design to build backend solutions and front-end components that can be used end-to-end across our product. In this role, you will shape the product strategy and roadmap for tools built on our first-in-class DNA science, the world’s largest genomic database, and over 45 billion historical records. You will lead the charge in creating powerful, engaging discovery experiences that help users unlock their family history by bridging the gap between genetic data and ancestral stories. We are seeking a persistent problem-solver who thrives in ambiguity, takes deep ownership of the product lifecycle, and is dedicated to overcoming roadblocks to deliver truly resonant user experiences.

What You Will Do
  • Lead continuous product discovery by rapidly prototyping, interviewing customers, and validating assumptions to test hypotheses before building.

  • Partner with engineering and architecture to build a genetic genealogy platform—the APIs, matching logic, and front end components that will power our products.

  • Write agents to combine historical and genetic data to provide new insights to our users.

  • Develop and articulate a vision for an integrated experience that seamlessly combines DNA insights with historical records, grounded in customer needs and the latest trends in genomic and genealogical data.

  • Surface meaningful family connections by combining the richness of our record artifacts with the power of DNA.

  • Lead UI/UX design initiatives in collaboration with your product designer to create elegant, intuitive components that help simplify the complexities of research through combined genetic and historical record sets.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to transform your strategic vision into a globally scalable product, taking into account local customer needs, cultural nuances, and competitive landscapes.

  • Work closely with UX research and design, marketing, customer support, and legal teams to deliver value to customers swiftly and consistently.

  • Learn rapidly from both quantitative and qualitative feedback, and adapt strategies with agility based on these insights.

  • Partner closely with Senior Engineers to own the platform vision, use-case prioritization, and the internal developer experience.

  • Engage with our content professionals and in-house genealogists to gain a thorough understanding of Ancestry’s content, which includes over 60 billion artifacts and user-created trees.

Who you are
  • At least 4 years of experience delivering successful consumer products.

  • A proven track record in developing recommendation systems at scale.

  • Deep product discovery skills, with a demonstrated ability to interview users, analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and collaborate tightly with UX design and engineering.

  • Experience building and using  agentic workflows for the product discovery process.

  • A systems-thinking approach, showing you can handle immense complexity, navigate ambiguity, and bridge the gap between technical architecture and business strategy.

  • Understanding of agentic frameworks and experience writing agents.

  • Strong, proven collaboration skills with Data Science, backend engineering, and UX design teams to build data-driven products that serve millions of global users.

  • Experience partnering with UX to build highly functional internal tools or reference components.

  • Exceptional skills in written communication, presentation, meeting management, and team-building.

  • A resilient work ethic driven by data, with the ability to independently gather the necessary information to make informed decisions.

  • Experience with experimentation to evaluate the impact of feature and algorithmic updates, combined with strong user experience instincts.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree and a background in STEM, especially genomics, are a plus.

Why Ancestry?

Join a dedicated team working to connect millions of people with their past and enrich their futures. At Ancestry, you will play a role in pioneering legal solutions that shape the consumer genomics industry. Your contributions will help foster and protect our workforce that is dedicated to helping our customers tell their own stories, while supporting a brand recognized and trusted around the world. We offer a collaborative workplace, competitive compensation, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
