What is a UX design internship?

A UX Design Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in user experience (UX) design. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced UX designers to assist with tasks such as user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing. The goal of the internship is to help interns develop practical skills in designing user-friendly digital products and to build a portfolio for future job opportunities. Internships can last anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on the company.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a UX design internship?

As a UX Design intern, you can expect to work on tasks such as user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, conducting usability testing, and collaborating closely with designers, developers, and product managers. Interns often assist in gathering and synthesizing user feedback to inform design decisions, and may contribute to both new feature design and improvements to existing products. The environment is typically fast-paced and collaborative, offering plenty of opportunities to learn from experienced UX professionals and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Design Intern, you need a foundational understanding of user-centered design principles, wireframing, and prototyping, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, and knowledge of usability testing methods are typically expected. Strong collaboration, curiosity, and clear communication help interns stand out when working with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial to effectively contribute to the design process, ensure user needs are met, and support the development of impactful digital products.

Job description

Are you a seasoned designer eager to join a dynamic team transforming how buildings are designed, built and operated? If so, come join the Tandem Connect team at Autodesk! Working with the Tandem team, our mission is to create integration technology and solutions that will transform how Buildings and Factories are operated via Digital Twin technology. This is a unique position to join a fast-moving team within Autodesk building out a new market segment for Operations.

We are seeking a Senior UX Designer to help design intuitive, scalable experiences for building, configuring, and managing integrations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex systems, enjoys simplifying technical workflows, and collaborates closely with engineering and product teams to deliver high-quality user experiences. As part of this role, you will also help shape emerging AI‑driven experiences within Tandem Connect, including assistant-based and intelligent workflow interactions. These experiences may support users in configuring integrations, troubleshooting issues, and navigating complex systems. You will play a key role in designing interactions that balance automation with user control, ensuring transparency, usability, and trust in AI‑assisted workflows.

Responsibilities
  • Design end-to-end user experiences for Tandem Connect workflows
  • Translate complex technical concepts (APIs, data mappings, event flows, plugins) into clear, usable interaction models and interfaces
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs to communicate solutions effectively
  • Collaborate closely with product managers and engineers to deliver practical, high‑quality solutions within technical constraints
  • Contribute to and apply design systems, patterns, and standards to ensure consistency across the product
  • Participate in user research and usability testing to validate designs and improve workflows
  • Use product analytics, customer feedback, and qualitative insights to iterate and refine designs
  • Support discovery work by exploring multiple design approaches and helping define problem spaces at the feature level
  • Communicate design decisions clearly to cross‑functional stakeholders
  • Design and iterate on AI‑assisted experiences, such as guided workflows, assistants, or intelligent recommendations that help users configure and manage integrations
  • Translate complex system behaviours into understandable AI interactions, including clear system feedback, error handling, and user control mechanisms
  • Explore and prototype new interaction patterns for AI‑driven interfaces (e.g. conversational, command‑based, or hybrid UI + assistant experiences)
  • Collaborate with engineering and product to define appropriate roles for AI within the user experience, balancing automation with predictability and user trust
Minimum Qualifications
  • 4-6+ years of professional UX/UI design experience working in cross‑functional product teams
  • Strong skills in interaction design, information architecture, and visual design
  • Experience designing for complex, technical, or data‑driven products (e.g. developer tools, SaaS platforms, dashboards, workflow systems)
  • Ability to break down ambiguous problems and deliver clear, user‑centred solutions
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma (or equivalent)
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present and explain design decisions to peers and stakeholders
  • Experience working in agile environments and collaborating closely with engineering teams
  • Interest in, or experience with, designing AI‑assisted or conversational user experiences (e.g. assistants, copilots, or intelligent automation)
  • Understanding of human‑centered design principles and usability best practices
  • Portfolio demonstrating problem‑solving process and shipped work
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing for integration platforms, APIs, or developer‑facing tools
  • Familiarity with concepts such as data mapping, event‑driven systems, or workflow orchestration
  • Experience designing systems with modular or plugin‑based architectures
  • Experience working on enterprise or B2B SaaS products
  • Exposure to design systems and component libraries
  • Experience designing AI‑powered or assistant‑based user experiences (e.g. copilots, chat interfaces, or intelligent workflow tools)
  • Understanding of UX considerations for AI systems, such as transparency, user control, error recovery, and trust
  • Experience working on tools for technical users where automation augments (but does not replace) user intent
Salary Transparency

Salary is one part of Autodesk’s competitive compensation package. Offers are based on the candidate’s experience and geographic location. In addition to base salaries, our compensation package may include annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.
