What is a UVA RN?

UVA RNs are Registered Nurses who work at the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System. They provide direct patient care, administer medications, coordinate with healthcare teams, and support patients and their families throughout treatment. UVA RNs may work in various departments such as emergency care, surgery, pediatrics, or intensive care, depending on their specialization and training. They are essential for ensuring high-quality, compassionate healthcare at one of Virginia’s leading medical centers.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a UVA RN?

To thrive as a UVA RN, you need strong clinical nursing skills, thorough patient assessment abilities, and a valid RN license, often with a BSN degree preferred. Familiarity with Epic (UVA's electronic health record system), medication administration technologies, and evidence-based practice protocols is necessary. Outstanding communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set top performers apart in patient-centered care. These skills are crucial to ensure high-quality care, patient safety, and effective collaboration within the dynamic UVA Health environment.

What are typical challenges an RN faces when working in an urgent care or ambulatory care (UVA) setting?

Registered Nurses in urgent care or ambulatory care settings often encounter fast-paced environments where they must quickly assess and prioritize patient needs. Managing a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, handling walk-in cases, and coordinating with providers for timely interventions can be challenging. Additionally, RNs in these settings frequently multitask between direct patient care, documentation, and assisting with procedures, which requires strong organizational and communication skills.
