Job Summary

The Swiss CNC Operator-I will operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines, including CNC Swiss style (sliding headstock) lathes, CNC lathes, CNC milling machines, etc. Operate machines to produce small diameter, close tolerance parts, including pointed parts.   Following standard operating procedures and instructions. Set up and operate Swiss equipment and perform any other functions within the department that may be necessary.

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Run machine(s) as assigned achieving specifications including quality and throughput.
  • Implement continuous improvement activities. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform ERP system transactions.
  • Perform required daily maintenance to equipment and tools.
  • Review setup sheet and specs to understand machining sequence and dimensions of finished workpiece.
  • Work from procedures and prescribed operation sequences to achieve parts per print and quality specifications.
  • Adjust tools as needed ex: Tool offsets, guide bushing tension etc. monitoring process for tool conditions, burrs and surface finishes.
  • Assemble cutting tools in tool holders and position in machine spindles as specified, using hand tools, or insert cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
  • Ensure workpiece is being properly lubricated and cooled.
  • Monitor, observe and listen to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Change cutting tools and location of workpiece during machining process per setup instructions; if the problem requires modification to the cutting program, shut down the machine and inform for CNC Operator- III and/or Lead.
  • Notify supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Perform own part inspection during machining process to measure workpiece to check to match specs, using measuring instruments such as microscope, optical comparator, micrometer, caliper, dial indicators and gauges.
  • Simultaneous to CNC machining operation, perform a variety of secondary operations as required.
  • Machine materials other than metal, such as composites, plastic, and rubber.

Qualifications

  • 1 to 3 year's experience in a small device manufacturing environment as a CNC Machining Operator/setup Operator is preferred. 
  • Experience operating Citizen, Star, Tsugami CNC Swiss lathes desired or other CNC Turning Centers or CNC equipment.
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing, aerospace, machinery, metals are desired. Must be able to read blueprints, drawings, specifications and quality plans and have strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and capable of meeting deadlines. 
  • Good manual dexterity and ability to use measurement and inspection tools. 
  • Good work habits, strong workmanship and a positive attitude are required as well as an ability, desire, and flexibility to perform a variety of machining operations and other functions within manufacturing as needed. 

Education Requirements

H.S. Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a vocational school in manufacturing/machining or engineering discipline is a plus.
