AspectUtility TrailersTruck Drivers

Work EnvironmentOperate trailers for hauling goods, often on-site or at loading docksDrive trucks on highways, urban roads, and delivery routes
Industry UsageUsed across construction, moving, and delivery sectorsPrimarily employed in freight, logistics, and transportation industries

Utility Trailers are used to transport goods and equipment, often attached to vehicles, while Truck Drivers operate the trucks that pull these trailers. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or service for your transportation needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Utility Trailer Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Utility Trailer Technician, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of trailer systems, and often a high school diploma or vocational training in automotive repair. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, welding equipment, air brake systems, and relevant safety certifications is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help technicians excel in inspecting, repairing, and maintaining trailers. These skills ensure trailers are safe, reliable, and compliant with regulations, minimizing downtime and accidents.

What are some common challenges faced by Utility Trailer Technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Utility Trailer Technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex mechanical or electrical issues, working with limited parts availability, and performing repairs in various weather conditions. Staying updated with manufacturer training and technical bulletins can help with troubleshooting newer trailer models. Collaborating closely with other technicians and parts departments ensures efficient workflow and helps resolve issues faster. Effective time management and communication skills are also essential for meeting deadlines and maintaining safety standards.

What are utility trailers?

Utility trailers are versatile, non-motorized vehicles designed to be towed by cars, trucks, or SUVs. They are commonly used for transporting goods, equipment, landscaping materials, or recreational vehicles. Utility trailers come in various sizes and styles, including open and enclosed options, to accommodate different hauling needs. Their simple design makes them easy to use and maintain, making them a popular choice for homeowners, contractors, and businesses.

Position Summary
We are seeking hardworking, dependable individuals to join our team as Geotechnical Driller's Assistants. This is a hands-on position supporting geotechnical drilling operations for construction, transportation, environmental, and engineering projects. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced drillers and field personnel, assisting with drilling operations, equipment maintenance, site setup, and sample handling. No geology or drilling experience is required-we are willing to train motivated individuals with a strong work ethic and a commitment to safety. This is not a desk job. If you enjoy working outdoors, traveling, operating equipment, and staying active throughout the day, this may be the career for you.
Responsibilities
  • Assist geotechnical drillers with daily drilling operations.
  • Load, unload, and organize drilling equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Handle soil and rock samples as directed by project personnel.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area around drilling equipment.
  • Assist with drill rig setup, operation, and breakdown.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and vehicles.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and support equipment.
  • Drive company pickup trucks and tow utility trailers as needed.
  • Follow all company, client, and OSHA safety requirements.
  • Work effectively as part of a field crew in changing conditions.

Work Environment
This is a physically demanding outdoor position that requires:
  • Frequent travel, often spending up to five days per week away from home. Extended runs longer than five days on occasion.
  • Typical workdays of 10+ hours, with occasional longer shifts.
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Working on construction sites, roadways, airports, and undeveloped properties.
  • Working on and around heavy equipment, including geotechnical drill rigs.
  • Regular lifting of 85+ pounds.
  • Standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and carrying equipment throughout the workday.
  • Early morning starts and overnight travel.

Qualifications
Preferred
  • Experience in construction, drilling, landscaping, utility work, farming, trucking, military service, or other outdoor labor positions.
  • Experience towing trailers or operating equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand and power tools.

Required
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck and tow a utility trailer.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work extended hours.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work on a daily basis.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and client-required drug screenings and background checks.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
  • Overtime paid for all hours worked above 40 per week.
  • Company-paid travel expenses and per diem (if applicable).
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Paid training and opportunities for advancement.
  • Career path opportunities to become a Lead Driller, Field Technician, or Drilling Inspector.

Who Succeeds in This Role?
  • Enjoys working outdoors rather than behind a desk.
  • Doesn't mind getting dirty and working with their hands.
  • Likes operating equipment and learning new skills.
  • Is dependable and shows up ready to work every day.
  • Enjoys travel and seeing new places.
  • Works well as part of a team.
  • Takes safety seriously.

If you're looking for a career that offers travel, overtime opportunities, hands-on work, and room for
advancement, we'd like to hear from you. No prior drilling experience required-just a strong work
ethic and willingness to learn.
