Utility Safety Manager information

What does a utility safety manager do?

A Utility Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs within utility companies, such as those in electric, water, or gas services. They ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, conduct safety training, and investigate incidents to prevent workplace injuries. Utility Safety Managers also analyze workplace hazards and recommend improvements to operational procedures. Their primary goal is to create a safe work environment for all employees and contractors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a utility safety manager?

To thrive as a Utility Safety Manager, you need a solid background in occupational health and safety, utility operations, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in safety management or a related field. Familiarity with OSHA regulations, incident reporting tools, and certifications like CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional) is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively promote safety culture and manage teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for minimizing workplace hazards and ensuring regulatory compliance in potentially high-risk utility environments.

What are some common challenges utility safety managers face when implementing new safety protocols?

Utility Safety Managers often encounter resistance to change when introducing new safety protocols, as employees may be accustomed to existing procedures. Additionally, coordinating training across diverse teams and shifts can be complex, especially in field environments. Ensuring compliance while maintaining productivity requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. Overcoming these challenges typically involves fostering a safety-first culture, providing clear rationale for changes, and engaging team members in the process.

Job description

Company Name: MC4 Construction LLC

Location: Las Vegas, NV (Corporate Hub with Regular Field Deployment)

Pay Rate: $30-$40 per hour based on experience

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Schedule: Monday – Friday (Occasional site visits and overtime as needed)

Industry: Civil Infrastructure, Utilities & Heavy Construction

The Opportunity

Command Jobsite Compliance. Champion a Culture of Prevention and Operational Excellence in the Southwest.

MC4 Construction LLC is seeking a highly disciplined Construction & Infrastructure Safety Manager to direct our comprehensive field protection, transportation compliance, and risk mitigation systems. Operating as a critical regulatory link across our civil infrastructure and utility construction divisions in the Las Vegas valley, this leadership position is engineered for an active safety professional who prefers running hands-on field protocols over sitting behind a desk.

You will hold absolute authority over corporate safety training lifecycles, municipal utility certifications, DOT driver protocols, and active project risk forecasting. This is your opportunity to lead a safety-first workforce within an organization that actively invests in your regulatory decisions, provides modern diagnostic resources, and values the protection of its crew above all else. If you are a technical risk analyst with a background in utility safety enforcement and heavy logistics compliance, MC4 Construction LLC provides the platform to build an institutional safety legacy.

Key Responsibilities

You will oversee the entire regulatory lifecycle of our workforce, equipment, and jobsites, ensuring zero-incident tracking and absolute standard compliance:

  • Field Training Architecture: Architect and execute our continuous safety education framework, commanding employee safety orientations, mandatory Weekly Toolbox Talks, Monthly Safety General Meetings, and Comprehensive Quarterly Group Training Seminars.
  • DOT & Fleet Safety Command: Direct our commercial driver asset infrastructure, managing the complete corporate CDL/DOT compliance programs, executing manual drive-testing protocols, and auditing daily driver walk-around inspection manifests.
  • Utility Certification Enforcement: Champion specialty utility training and field safety validations, ensuring site personnel secure and maintain mandatory compliance credentials for IMSA, NV Energy, and Southwest Gas frameworks.
  • Forensic Incident Investigation: Head detailed root-cause analyses and technical reporting for all field accidents, near-miss incidents, worker's compensation claims, and utility line-break events.
  • Pre-Construction Risk Forecasting: Formulate rigorous, site-specific Safety Hazard Analyses (SHAs) for mandatory integration into all project estimation and field turnover meetings.
  • Field Audits & Site Inspections: Conduct unannounced, technical site inspections and asset audits across regional jobsites to monitor and enforce strict OSHA compliance, proper specialized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) deployment, and tool integrity.
  • Policy & Emergency Response Development: Design, modify, and implement corporate safety policies, compliance record-keeping matrices, and actionable emergency response structures, stepping in to manage field first-aid actions if necessary.

What You Need to Succeed (Qualifications)

  • Education Foundation: A Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a closely related technical field; an equivalent combination of a High School Diploma and extensive hands-on infrastructure safety leadership may be accepted.
  • Professional Experience: 3+ years of verified experience directing safety operations inside heavy civil, utility construction, or industrial infrastructure environments.
  • Regulatory Mastery: Profound, functional knowledge of OSHA codes, DOT regulations, safety management systems (SMS), and technical hazard assessment mechanisms.
  • Operational Command: Exceptional analytical problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to lead training sessions, execute field audits, and coordinate compliance databases using Microsoft Office.
  • Physical Stamina: Complete physical capability to perform site inspections across raw terrain and variable desert weather conditions, maintaining functional literacy in basic first-aid and emergency response procedures.

Mandatory Technical Profiles:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or equivalent construction safety credentials.
  • Prior experience directly managing a workplace compliance testing program.

Compensation & Premium Benefits

We reward regulatory leadership, precise risk management, and training excellence with a premium rewards package:

  • Competitive Base Salary: Tailored directly to your technical infrastructure background and professional safety certifications.
  • Comprehensive Health & Welfare: Premium Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance plan coverages.
  • Future Wealth Generation: Corporate Retirement Savings Program alongside structural performance incentives.
  • Work-Life Balance Allocations: Full eligibility for earned Paid Time Off (PTO) and dedicated personal leave.
  • Culture of Appreciation: Direct ownership over culture-building rewards, including our annual safety recognition celebrations.
  • Continuous Development: Direct access to continuous technical education, industry conventions, and professional trade certifications.
