Job description


Position Summary:
Provides technical support to pharmacists in the preparation and dispensing of medications, including counting, pouring, labeling, packaging, and drawing medications into syringes under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Assists clients, students, clinicians, and technicians by providing information regarding pharmacy procedures, prescription pricing, medication availability, and pharmacy services. Receives and processes prescription orders, performs data entry, and conducts initial screening of prescriptions and medication orders for completeness and accuracy, including verification of required signatures, dates, case numbers, patient weights, quantities, directions, addresses, and other required information. Contacts clinicians to clarify incomplete or inaccurate orders and ensures prescriptions remain current. Assists with daily billing and charge entry for client prescriptions, hospital departments, and research projects. Communicates with clients regarding prescription status, refill requests, billing, shipping, and pickup or mail-out arrangements. Answers incoming phone calls, coordinates prescription refills, and helps ensure timely, accurate, and efficient medication dispensing while providing excellent customer service. This position provides opportunities for professional growth through structured training and demonstrated competency in advanced pharmacy technician functions, including nonsterile compounding, hazardous medication and chemotherapy preparation in accordance with USP <800> standards, and automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis) inventory management.

Essential Duties:
  • Process prescription refill requests and verify prescription information.
  • Prepare inpatient and outpatient prescriptions for dispensation to be checked by the pharmacist.
  • Provide customer service to clients picking up prescriptions.
  • Maintain compliance with state pharmacy regulations and hospital safety standards.
  • Provide customer service to clients on the telephone.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, pharmacists, students, and hospital staff.

Supervision:
No formal supervisory responsibilities.
Conditions of Employment:

  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:
  • National pharmacy technician certification (e.g., PTCB or equivalent).
  • Ability to carry 40 lbs of pet food or fluids.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in a veterinary hospital, academic medical center, or hospital pharmacy.
  • Experience with sterile and/or non-sterile compounding, including familiarity with USP standards.
  • Familiarity with controlled substance regulations and audit preparation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to support students or trainees in a teaching environment.
