What is a user interface design intern?

User Interface (UI) Design Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in creating and improving the visual and interactive elements of digital products, such as websites or mobile apps. They work under the guidance of experienced designers to develop layouts, icons, buttons, and other graphical components that enhance user experience. UI Design Interns collaborate with UX designers, product managers, and developers to ensure designs are both visually appealing and functional. Their role often includes creating wireframes, prototypes, and design assets while learning industry-standard tools and best practices.

What types of projects and tasks can a user interface design intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a User Interface Design Intern, you will typically participate in a range of hands-on projects, such as creating wireframes, designing UI components, and assisting with user testing sessions. You'll collaborate closely with UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that your designs align with user needs and business goals. Interns often contribute to real product features, allowing them to see the impact of their work in a live environment while building a diverse portfolio. Expect regular feedback sessions and opportunities to learn industry-standard tools like Figma or Sketch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user interface design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Interface Design Intern, you need foundational skills in visual design, wireframing, and user experience principles, often supported by coursework or a portfolio of design projects. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to accept feedback help you stand out in this collaborative and iterative environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating user-friendly interfaces and effectively contributing to team-driven design projects.

You'll translate user and business requirements into high-fidelity designs, create a cohesive visual language and reusable UI components, and collaborate closely with the UX Lead, product team, and data engineers to deliver an intuitive, accessible, and visually compelling experience. You'll also develop external marketing and presentation materials that promote the product and drive adoption across the mission community.

What you’ll do:
• Lead the visual design strategy, brand identity, and overall look and feel of a mission-critical data brokerage solution.
• Design and establish the foundational UI kit and scalable design system that will serve as the product's visual framework.
• Create high-fidelity mockups, prototypes, and polished user interfaces that translate complex requirements into intuitive experiences.
• Own the interface and interaction design, ensuring a modern, accessible, and visually compelling user experience.
• Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, developers, and stakeholders in an Agile environment to deliver user-centered solutions.
• Develop and maintain the product's visual language, graphic identity, and reusable design components.
• Produce externally facing marketing and communication materials, including presentations, graphics, and collateral, to promote the solution and drive adoption.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to solve complex client challenges through thoughtful, high-quality visual design.
• Continuously refine and enhance the product's visual experience using user feedback, design best practices, and emerging design trends. What you’ll need to succeed:
• Active TS/SCI security clearance with a CI Polygraph.
• Bachelor's degree in Design, Fine Arts, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Graphic Design, or a related field.
• 4–7 years of experience with a strong focus on visual design, branding, and UI design systems.
• Proven experience applying user-centered design principles to establish brand identity, build scalable UI systems, and enhance the visual appeal of digital products.
• Exceptional visual design skills, supported by a portfolio showcasing branding, logo design, typography, color theory, and modern UI design.
• Demonstrated experience building design systems, UI kits, and reusable component libraries from the ground up.
• Strong proficiency in creating high-fidelity UI designs, visual mockups, prototypes, and responsive web experiences.
• Experience designing intuitive information architecture and scalable, user-friendly digital interfaces.
• Ability to transform complex data into clean, compelling data visualizations and dashboard experiences.
• Strong skills in iconography, vector graphics, visual storytelling, and digital brand development.
• Proficiency with industry-standard design tools, including Figma. SALARY RANGE: $166,000 - $202,000
