What is a user interface design intern?

User Interface (UI) Design Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in creating and improving the visual and interactive elements of digital products, such as websites or mobile apps. They work under the guidance of experienced designers to develop layouts, icons, buttons, and other graphical components that enhance user experience. UI Design Interns collaborate with UX designers, product managers, and developers to ensure designs are both visually appealing and functional. Their role often includes creating wireframes, prototypes, and design assets while learning industry-standard tools and best practices.

What types of projects and tasks can a user interface design intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a User Interface Design Intern, you will typically participate in a range of hands-on projects, such as creating wireframes, designing UI components, and assisting with user testing sessions. You'll collaborate closely with UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that your designs align with user needs and business goals. Interns often contribute to real product features, allowing them to see the impact of their work in a live environment while building a diverse portfolio. Expect regular feedback sessions and opportunities to learn industry-standard tools like Figma or Sketch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user interface design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Interface Design Intern, you need foundational skills in visual design, wireframing, and user experience principles, often supported by coursework or a portfolio of design projects. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch is commonly expected, along with a basic understanding of prototyping and collaboration platforms. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to accept feedback help you stand out in this collaborative and iterative environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating user-friendly interfaces and effectively contributing to team-driven design projects.

Description

Job Description

Our client is looking for a UX/UI Designer to help shape end-to-end customer journeys across our ecommerce experience โ€” from first click to purchase and beyond. You'll design across the full journey, partnering closely with Product Managers, Engineering, Brand & Creative, and Site Experience to turn business goals and customer needs into clear, well-crafted design solutions.

The client is a growing, fast-moving business, and priorities here evolve as we scale. You'll be someone who can move fluidly between projects, stay focused on the customer journey as the details shift, and bring structure and clarity to your own work without needing everything mapped out in advance. Some of what you'll take on will span multiple teams or business units, so you're comfortable coordinating across stakeholders to keep things moving.

This role reports to the Senior Director, Digital Product & Experience to start with and offers real autonomy to own your work end-to-end, with support from a small, collaborative design and research team.

What you'll get to do:

โ€ข Own end-to-end UX/UI design for assigned features and product areas across ecommerce experience โ€” from problem framing through wireframes, prototypes, and polished UI

โ€ข Partner closely with Product Managers to translate business goals and requirements into clear, user-centered design solutions

โ€ข Coordinate design work on initiatives that span multiple teams or business units, aligning stakeholders and managing dependencies to keep work moving

โ€ข Partner closely with Engineering, building Figma files that are structured for clean design-to-code handoff, and participating in sprint/agile ceremonies to stay aligned on scope and timing

โ€ข Conduct evaluative research โ€” usability testing and validation โ€” before final designs are handed off to Engineering

โ€ข Conduct competitive research and apply industry benchmarks (e.g., Baymard Institute) to inform design decisions

โ€ข Adapt quickly and prioritize effectively as business needs and project scope shift, without losing sight of the end-to-end customer journey

โ€ข Present design work and rationale to Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional partners

โ€ข Ensure design consistency, accessibility, and quality across desktop and mobile experiences

โ€ข Iterate on shipped work based on performance data and customer feedback

Qualifications

Who you are:

โ€ข 4-6+ years of experience in UX/UI design, ideally in an ecommerce or digital product environment

โ€ข Bachelor's degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent experience

โ€ข Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UX process: problem framing, wireframes, prototypes, and shipped work

โ€ข Experience designing within an established design system, with an eye for consistency and reusable patterns

โ€ข Comfortable managing multiple concurrent projects and coordinating across teams and stakeholders

โ€ข Proficiency in Figma, including prototyping and component-based design

โ€ข Demonstrated ability to present and defend design decisions to cross-functional partners

โ€ข A track record of taking on increasing scope and ownership in your work

โ€ข Self-directed and resourceful โ€” comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-moving, evolving environment

โ€ข Excellent written and verbal communication skills
