User Experience Graduate information

What is a user experience graduate?

User Experience (UX) Graduates are individuals who have recently completed a degree or certification in user experience design or a related field. They typically possess foundational knowledge in areas such as user research, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and human-centered design. As entry-level professionals, UX graduates often work under the guidance of senior designers to help create intuitive and effective digital products. Their primary focus is on understanding users’ needs and ensuring that digital interfaces are easy and enjoyable to use.

What types of projects can a user experience graduate expect to work on in their first year?

As a User Experience Graduate, you will typically be involved in a variety of projects such as user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing. You'll often collaborate with designers, developers, and product managers to help create and refine digital products or services. Early in your career, you might assist with gathering user feedback, analyzing data, and supporting the design process for both web and mobile applications. This hands-on experience helps build a strong foundation in UX principles and tools while giving you exposure to the full product development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user experience graduate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience Graduate, you need a solid understanding of UX design principles, user research, wireframing, and prototyping, typically backed by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch and basic knowledge of usability testing platforms are highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and empathize with users. These abilities are crucial for creating user-centered digital products that meet both business and user needs.

Your role in helping us shape the future:

We are seeking a versatile and forward-thinking Senior Product Designer & Product Manager (Hybrid) to drive innovation across our Autos and Travel verticals.

In this dual-craft role, you will bridge the gap between high-level business strategy and hands-on UX/UI execution. You will partner directly with General Managers (GMs) to define market-winning experiences, translate business objectives into clear requirements, and use AI tools to rapidly prototype, iterate, and deliver production-ready design assets.

If you thrive on end-to-end product ownership—from market strategy down to Jira ticket creation and pixel-perfect design delivery—this role offers unmatched influence and hands-on impact.

Are you up to the challenge?

Strategic Product Management & Execution Business Partnership:
  • Collaborate closely with GM leadership in Autos and Travel to translate revenue, engagement, and audience growth goals into crisp product strategies and experiences.
  • Define and write comprehensive product requirements, user stories, edge-case scenarios, and success metrics.
  • Own the product backlog in Jira—writing detailed tickets, prioritizing sprints, and maintaining alignment between engineering, design, and business teams.
  • Measure product features against key performance indicators (KPIs) and continuously optimize based on analytics, user research, and market trends.
Product Design & AI Acceleration
  • Lead design ideation, wireframing, interactive prototyping, and final production design output across responsive web and mobile experiences.
  • Actively leverage AI design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma AI plugins, Claude Design, etc.) to accelerate concept creation and asset generation.
  • Build scalable, accessible UI design patterns aligned with U.S. News’ brand guidelines while advocating for intuitive, low-friction user journeys.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS You should definitely have:
  • 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in Product Management, AND/OR
  • 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in UX/UI & Product Design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • Having both is a major plus but is not required
  • AI Tool Proficiency (Must-Have): Deep familiarity and active hands-on proficiency with AI-assisted tools for design, ideation, copy generation, workflow automation, and prototyping.
  • Dual-Mindset Capability: Comfort transitioning fluidly between analytical business thinking (metrics, Jira backlogs, GTM alignment) and creative visual execution (Figma, layout, visual polish).
  • Communication: Ability to articulate product design choices, trade-offs, and technical specs clearly to executive stakeholders, engineering leads, and cross-functional teams.
It would be nice if you had:
  • Prior background owning end-to-end projects from a product or design standpoint or formal ownership of cross-functional release cycles.
  • Experience working within digital publishing, e-commerce, media, or complex content-driven verticals (e.g., automotive marketplaces, travel booking/guidance systems).
What it’s like to work with us: Talent is our best asset!

We invest in people with passion and potential who understand U.S. News’ dedication to our consumers.

Entrepreneurial, mission-driven culture with core values of quality and integrity
