What is a user experience developer?

A User Experience (UX) Developer is a professional who focuses on creating seamless, intuitive, and engaging digital experiences by combining design principles with front-end development skills. They bridge the gap between designers and developers, ensuring that web or app interfaces are both visually appealing and functionally effective. UX Developers use their understanding of user behavior, usability, and accessibility to implement interactive features and optimize user satisfaction. Their work typically involves prototyping, coding, user testing, and refining interfaces based on feedback. Ultimately, they help ensure that products are easy to use and meet the needs of their target audience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a user experience developer?

To thrive as a User Experience Developer, you need a solid understanding of UX principles, front-end development skills (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Sketch, as well as frameworks like React or Angular, is typically expected. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help you translate user needs into functional, engaging interfaces. These abilities are crucial for creating seamless, user-centered products that drive satisfaction and business success.

How does a user experience developer typically collaborate with designers and developers on projects?

A User Experience Developer frequently acts as a bridge between UI/UX designers and backend developers. They work closely with designers to translate visual concepts and wireframes into interactive, accessible, and responsive interfaces, ensuring the end product matches design intent. Additionally, they collaborate with developers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic and optimize application performance. Regular communication, code reviews, and iterative feedback sessions are common, fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes both usability and technical feasibility.

HPE is always seeking to be a force for good and push for better. As we continue to enhance our Hybrid and Private Cloud portfolios, we need people who are inspired to make an impact right away. With this in mind, we are looking to expand and grow our Private Cloud Engineering team with a talented and inspired Principal Software Engineer focused on front-end engineering, UI/UX, and product experience.

This role is focused on building intuitive, modern, and scalable user experiences using React and TypeScript. The ideal candidate combines deep front-end engineering expertise with strong product instincts, a strong sense of design, and the ability to simplify complex cloud, infrastructure, and automation workflows into polished, effective user experiences.

Essential Functions

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership for front-end architecture, UI implementation, and user experience across complex product areas.

  • Design, build, and maintain modern user interfaces using React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and related front-end technologies.

  • Help define the direction of our user experience by identifying opportunities to simplify workflows, improve usability, and create more consistent product experiences.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, backend engineers, architects, and customer-facing teams to translate complex requirements into intuitive, scalable user experiences.

  • Lead the development of reusable UI patterns, shared components, design system practices, accessibility standards, and front-end engineering best practices.

  • Evaluate existing product workflows and identify areas where the experience is confusing, inconsistent, inefficient, or difficult for customers to use.

  • Guide product roadmap discussions by providing technical expertise, design-informed feedback, and a deep understanding of customer workflows.

  • Participate in and lead the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of front-end software systems.

  • Mentor engineers, review technical designs, provide feedback on implementation approaches, and help raise the overall quality of front-end development across the team.

  • Assist with customer issues as needed, especially where usability, workflow clarity, performance, accessibility, or front-end behavior impacts the customer experience.

  • Collaborate with sales engineering, product, and operational teams to understand customer needs and recommend practical, scalable solutions.

  • Help ensure technical standards, documentation requirements, accessibility expectations, and user experience standards are met across the areas you support.

About You

You are a strong fit for this role if you:

  • Have deep experience building production web applications with React and TypeScript.

  • Have a strong sense of design and user experience, even if your background is primarily engineering rather than formal product design.

  • Can take a complex technical workflow and make it easier to understand, easier to use, and easier to support.

  • Have strong product instincts and can identify when a workflow, interface, or interaction pattern is not serving the user well.

  • Have experience translating designs, wireframes, prototypes, product requirements, and customer feedback into polished, production-ready user interfaces.

  • Have deep knowledge of HTML, CSS, responsive design, browser behavior, accessibility, front-end performance, and modern front-end architecture.

  • Have experience designing scalable front-end application structures, reusable component models, and maintainable UI patterns.

  • Have experience working with RESTful APIs and integrating front-end applications with backend services.

  • Are comfortable with modern front-end tooling, package managers, build systems, version control systems, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Have experience with design systems, shared component libraries, or UI platform standards.

  • Have experience testing front-end applications, including unit, integration, end-to-end, accessibility, or visual regression testing.

  • Have experience working in complex technical domains such as cloud, virtualization, infrastructure, automation, IT Service Management, developer tools, or enterprise software.

  • Have enough understanding of compute, storage, networking, and cloud concepts to design and build effective experiences for highly technical users.

  • Have experience applying cloud technologies such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.

  • Have strong communication skills and can influence technical and product direction across engineering, product, design, sales engineering, and customer-facing teams.

  • Are comfortable mentoring engineers, setting technical direction, reviewing designs, and raising the quality bar across a team.

  • Can translate product requirements into technical direction, implementation plans, and front-end architecture decisions.

  • Are comfortable operating with ambiguity and helping teams move from unclear product needs to practical, well-designed solutions.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of experience contributing to technology projects and delivering solutions at scale.

  • Significant professional experience building production web applications with React, TypeScript, and modern front-end technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership for front-end architecture, UI development, product experience, or design system initiatives.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Pursuing or completed a Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field.

  • Experience working with enterprise SaaS, cloud management platforms, infrastructure software, developer tools, or operator-focused products.

  • Experience contributing to or leading a design system, shared component library, or front-end platform initiative.

  • Experience with accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.

  • Experience using customer feedback, usability research, analytics, or support data to improve product workflows.

  • Relevant certifications in cloud platforms, UX, accessibility, or front-end technologies.
