What is a user experience designer?

A User Experience (UX) Designer is a professional who focuses on creating products, systems, or services that offer meaningful and relevant experiences to users. They are responsible for the overall feel of the product, ensuring it is intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable to use. UX Designers conduct user research, create wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate closely with developers and other stakeholders to align the product with user needs. Their goal is to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty by enhancing the usability and accessibility of a product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience Designer, you need a strong understanding of user-centered design principles, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, typically supported by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and user research methodologies is essential. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and advocate for users' needs. These skills ensure the creation of intuitive, engaging products that meet both user goals and business objectives.

What are some common challenges user experience designers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

User Experience Designers often work closely with product managers, developers, and marketing teams to deliver user-centered solutions. A common challenge is balancing user needs with business goals and technical constraints, which requires clear communication and negotiation skills. Additionally, aligning different stakeholders' perspectives and managing feedback can be complex, but strong collaboration and empathy help bridge these gaps. Building relationships and establishing shared goals early in a project can significantly improve outcomes and workflow.

User Experience (UX) designers are in high demand across various industries as companies prioritize user-centered design to improve products and services. The role often requires skills in research, wireframing, and proficiency with tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and employment opportunities are expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

What exactly do user experience designers do?

Job description

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Does the idea of applying your talents at a company that assists people in understanding how to obtain additional health care benefits and compensates well for doing so, inspire you? We call it “Doing good while doing well” and invite you to apply to join us and begin moving forward along a beneficial career path – one built on providing solutions by helping others navigate through the complex world of health care benefits.

Here at BeneLynk, our mission is to improve lives and positively impact social determinants of health barriers by providing our healthcare partners with the information they need, and people with the advocacy they deserve. We are laser-focused on our longstanding area of expertise in the healthcare world. We fully understand barriers and surface solutions, then provide the advocacy that changes lives and improves outcomes. Everything we do, from the systems we build, to our government relations, to our outreach operations, is in service of this one central vision.

WHO WE ARE

We are big-hearted people, passionate about serving our health plan clients, their members, and each other. We are a team in every sense of the word, striving toward a common mission – that is the goal of everyone at BeneLynk. Every day, we are relentless in helping people who need essential resources to make their lives easier and healthier. The members we serve call us "miracles," "kind," "professional," "human," and "compassionate," and all with "service that gets the job done." We pride ourselves on creating a healthy environment for our employees to thrive in their ability to assist others.

UI/UX PRODUCT DESIGNER

POSITION SUMMARY

Benelynk is building the technology platform that powers Veteran Directed Care (VDC), a VA program that gives veterans the flexibility to direct their own long-term in-home care, including hiring and managing their own caregivers. We are looking for a UI/UX Designer to be the connective tissue between the people who use this platform and the engineers who build it.

BeneLynk’s Engagement Advocates engage Veteran’s enrolled in VA’s Veteran Directed Care (VDC) to help ensure that the Veteran has the tools and support needed to coordinate the care they need at home. These Advocates/Agents utilize an internal and proprietary platform (i.e., Veteran choose) to guide them through the process from onboarding, caregiver engagement, time submission/approval, payroll and reporting. This platform is designed to support BeneLynk Enrollment Advocate; however, it also has a self-service module to enable the Veteran, Case Manager, and the Direct Care Worker to access the system directly to perform the functions they require and to access their unique actions and reports. This role owns the process of turning the “voice of the user” — veterans, family caregivers, Direct Care Workers, Enrollment Advocates (case managers), and partner agencies (ADNAs) — along with input from subject matter experts, internal stakeholders, and engineering, into clear wireframes and interactive prototypes. These wireframes/prototypes will be rapidly created through the intersection of research (Outside In and Inside Out), useability expertise and the use current tools (e.g., AI, Claude, Figma). At BeneLynk, this role is a key to address usability issues and to proactively design an intuitive user experience within an Agile development process, collaborating with leadership to define and execute on its strategic vision. Because this platform serves veterans (many of whom are elderly or non-technical), family caregivers, professional Direct Care Workers, and internal operations staff, this role requires designing distinct, appropriately simple experiences for several very different audiences within a single connected system.

The candidate hired for this position will be both strategist and tactician. At BeneLynk we know that innovation does not come without rolling up our sleeves and getting the work done. The UI/UX Product Designer will be an integral piece in driving efficiency to executing existing product development processes/priorities and bringing new products to market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent BeneLynk’s Customers: This function is listed first, because we always want to be thinking of how best to serve our internal and external customers.
  • Oversee Product Development: The UI/UX Product Designer will work with the Operations team, development team, sales team, and all other appropriate stakeholders to prioritize and deliver solutions on time.
  • Set Product Strategy: In conjunction with the senior management team, the Product Owner and Veteran Choose team, the UI/UX Product Designer will inform and help to define the product strategy for the company.
  • To accomplish this goal, the Designer will need to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Product Owner and the heads of relevant departments within BeneLynk and maintain a deep and current understanding of the work of such departments.
  • The UI/UX Product Designer will be expected to challenge other members of the management team, to ask the difficult questions and execute with disciple that will lead to more rapid innovation.
  • Anticipate Opportunities: The UX Product Designer will be responsible for developing and maintaining a cutting edge understanding intuitive design principles as well as all the industries that BeneLynk touches. The Designer will use this knowledge to bring new products to market.

This position is both tactical and strategic reflecting the small, but growing, size of BeneLynk as a company. All of us, including our senior management team are on the front-line doing what needs to be done to establish BeneLynk as the nation’s financial management services for Veterans.

Additional Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Partner with subject matter experts and internal stakeholders to translate complex program rules — eligibility, service authorizations, budgets, timesheets, payroll, and compliance — into workflows that are simple and error-resistant for end users.
  • Produce user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes using a combination of standard design tools and AI-assisted design/prototyping tools, applying design judgment to refine AI-generated output into production-ready, on-brand designs.
  • Facilitate design-alignment workshops and structured reviews with product, engineering, compliance, and operations stakeholders to drive the team to consensus on system design and resolve open questions quickly.
  • Translate approved designs into detailed, developer-ready specifications, interaction notes, and edge-case documentation so engineering can build directly from your artifacts with minimal back-and-forth.
  • Design and maintain a consistent design system and component library used consistently across all user-facing roles and modules of the platform.
  • Plan and conduct user research (interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing) with veterans, family caregivers, Direct Care Workers, Enrollment Advocates, and partner agency staff, and synthesize findings into clear personas, journey maps, and problem statements.
  • Design for accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA or higher) as a baseline requirement, given the platform's elderly, low-tech, and non-native-English-speaking user populations.
  • Run usability testing on new and existing flows, and iterate designs based on user feedback, support/complaint themes, and product analytics.
  • Maintain clear documentation of design decisions and rationale to support audit readiness and compliance traceability (e.g., HIPAA, VA program requirements).
  • Stay embedded with engineering through implementation, reviewing built screens against design intent and resolving fidelity gaps.

Required Skills/Abilities/Experience:

  • Bachelors/Associates degree and 2 - 5+ years in healthcare with 5+ years in UI/UX Product Design
  • Experience in Agile business/software development lifecycle process and methodologies.
  • Excellence in the integration of expertise and experience with the use current tools (e.g., AI, Claude, Figma) to rapidly build wireframes and prototypes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • End user workflow experience.
  • Excellent Interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Adaptability, communication, empathy, problem-solving and teamwork. As a UI/UX designer, it’s important that you can collaborate effectively with those around you—from clients and stakeholders to developers and fellow designers, all the way through to the end user.
