Job description

A Workover Rig Operator is responsible for all activities in regards to operating a workover rig, supervising a crew, and ensuring customer satisfaction with all services.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works with a three to five person crew performing maintenance and repairs on oil and gas wells
  • Ensures all crew members are at work on time and properly prepared
  • Drives crew truck
  • Operates the rig safely in accordance with DOT regulations and those requested or designated by the customer
  • Operates power swivel
  • Pull and lay down rods, tubing, casing and other equipment as needed
  • Accurately performs torque calculations and specs
  • Performs pipe tallying, rigging up and down, nipple up and down BOP units and pipe handling
  • Performs all required equipment inspections on workover rig, fall arrest systems, derrick and mud pumps
  • Performs check on brake systems and confirms functionality
  • Performs BOP inspection, testing and installation as needed
  • Performs daily inspection and maintenance of equipment
  • Troubleshoots maintenance issues; performs worn equipment recognition checks, turns in maintenance request for repair or replacement of equipment as needed
  • Ensures efficient maintenance of assigned rig and crew truck
  • Able to instruct floorhands and derrickhands in use of all rig and pumping equipment
  • Able to instruct floorhands and derrickhands in use of all safety equipment
  • Able to keep work site, equipment, and tools clean and in good working order
  • Understands job steps and arranges rods and tubing in derrick correctly
  • Understands the rig's hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
  • Maintains contact and communication with Customer and Rig Supervisor
  • Maintains productivity standards for all rig employees and adheres to all applicable government regulations for compliance.
  • Completes and turns in field tickets in a timely manner and enters crew's hours into time tracking system
  • Works in the shop or assists in NDES Yard maintenance when necessary
  • Assists in repairs and preparing workover rig for deployment when necessary
  • Responsible for training in new crew members, specifically Floorhand-SSE's
  • Attends and participates in daily and monthly safety meetings
  • Understand and comply with company, customer, and health/safety policies, and any other regulations that are required.
  • Reports any and all incidents immediately to Rig Supervisor.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions
  • Performs other duties as directed by management.

  • Must be able to communicate using oral and basic written communication
  • Must pass a Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol screening and participate in the random testing pool
  • Must pass a background check and motor vehicle record check
  • Arrange for reliable transportation to and from work

Work Environment

This job operates in an outside environment. The role routinely works in all weather conditions, including but not limited to: extreme wind, rain, cold, heat, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position that works a 14 day on/7 day off rotation. This position regularly requires long hours and weekend work (including holidays) as job duties demand.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Class A or B CDL preferred

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous workover experience preferred
