We're hiring for our Fall 2026 school programs and are looking for dependable instructors who enjoy working with children and want to make a positive impact in local schools.

Hiring Timeline

We're hiring ahead of the school year so you'll have time to complete training and prepare for your classes.

  • Apply Now - applications reviewed as they come in
  • Interviews - August
  • Training - August
  • Teaching Begins - September

Our onboarding process is designed to help new instructors feel confident and prepared before leading their first class.

About the Role

We're looking for an instructor who lives in or near San Bruno and is available for after-school classes at elementary schools in the area.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking for consistent part-time afternoon work while working with elementary-age students.

Instructors who demonstrate strong performance and reliability may be considered for hourly pay increases, tournament support, and other special projects as opportunities arise.

Teaching Areas

Your primary assignments will be at schools in and around San Bruno and San Francisco area.

Instructors will be assigned to the same school locations each week. Occasional coverage at another nearby school may be requested when needed.

Reliable transportation is required. A personal vehicle is strongly preferred.

Schedule
  • Up to 4 afternoons per week
  • Classes typically begin between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM
  • Most classes run approximately 90 minutes
  • Exact days and school assignments will vary based on program needs

Please note that after-school classes generally take place during the same afternoon window, so additional hours are limited by school schedules. We aim to provide consistent assignments without promising more hours than our school programs can support.

What You'll Do
  • Teach engaging after-school chess classes to elementary students
  • Follow provided lesson plans and instructional materials
  • Create a fun, encouraging, and structured classroom environment
  • Help students learn chess fundamentals while developing confidence and problem-solving skills
  • Build positive relationships with students, school staff, and families
  • Arrive prepared, on time, and ready to lead each class
  • Maintain a safe and positive learning environment
  • Communicate professionally with the Yes For Chess team
  • Occasionally provide coverage at nearby schools when needed
What We're Looking For

Basic chess knowledge is required - you don't need to be a chess master.

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, punctual, and professional
  • Patient, friendly, and energetic
  • Great with elementary-aged children
  • Comfortable independently leading a classroom
  • Organized and communicative
  • Flexible when occasional coverage or travel between nearby schools is needed
  • Able to consistently commit to afternoon teaching assignments
  • Able to reliably travel to assigned school locations

Previous experience in teaching, coaching, tutoring, camps, youth programs, or childcare is highly valued.

A successful background check is required before employment.

Why Join Yes For Chess?

We're building a team, not just filling shifts.

Our instructors receive:

  • Paid training
  • Ongoing coaching and support
  • Competitive pay of $27-$29/hour
  • Consistent afternoon scheduling when school assignments are available
  • Opportunities for pay increases based on performance and experience
  • Opportunities to support tournaments and special projects
The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is dependable, comfortable working independently, and genuinely enjoys helping children learn.

You don't need to be a professional chess player. We're looking for someone who can teach patiently, manage a classroom confidently, communicate professionally, and show up consistently.

If you're excited to introduce young students to chess while becoming part of a supportive and growing instructional team, we'd love to hear from you.
