What is an upstream oil & gas job?

An Upstream Oil & Gas job involves exploring, drilling, and producing crude oil and natural gas. Professionals in this sector work in geology, engineering, drilling, and production operations to locate and extract hydrocarbons from underground reservoirs. These roles require specialized knowledge of reservoir management, drilling techniques, and safety regulations. Upstream operations are the first stage of the oil and gas industry, followed by midstream (transportation) and downstream (refining and distribution). Careers in this field often involve working in remote locations, offshore rigs, or drilling sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an upstream oil & gas position?

To thrive in an Upstream Oil & Gas role, you need a solid understanding of geology, petroleum engineering, drilling operations, and strong analytical skills, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Petrel, WellView, and various drilling and reservoir management systems, along with certifications like IWCF or Well Control, are typically required.
