What is an Unreal Engine game programmer?

An Unreal Engine Game Programmer is a software developer who specializes in creating, optimizing, and maintaining video games or interactive experiences using Unreal Engine, which is a powerful game development platform developed by Epic Games. They write code in languages like C++ and use Unreal's Blueprints visual scripting system to implement gameplay mechanics, graphics, physics, and AI. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with designers and artists to bring creative visions to life, troubleshooting bugs, and ensuring the game runs smoothly across different platforms.

How does an Unreal Engine game programmer typically collaborate with artists and designers during game development?

Unreal Engine Game Programmers work closely with artists and designers to bring creative visions to life while ensuring technical feasibility. Collaboration often involves implementing gameplay systems, integrating art assets, and troubleshooting issues that arise during development. Programmers may participate in regular meetings, use version control systems, and provide tools or scripts to streamline workflows for other team members. Clear communication and flexibility are essential, as priorities can shift based on feedback or changes in project scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine game programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine Game Programmer, you need strong proficiency in C++ programming, a solid understanding of game development principles, and experience with Unreal Engine's architecture and workflows. Familiarity with tools like Unreal Editor, Blueprint visual scripting, and source control systems such as Git is important, and certifications in Unreal Engine development can be advantageous. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication help programmers collaborate with designers and artists to realize game visions. These skills are crucial for building high-quality, performant games that meet both technical standards and creative goals.

About the role

We are looking for a software engineer with a strong background in game engine/realtime development. As a realtime 3D specialist, you will work with Unreal Engine to further develop our simulation capabilities for virtual environments for autonomous vehicles. This role will focus on bridging our core simulation engine with the game engine as well as developing new gameplay type features within Unreal. At Applied, we encourage all engineers to take ownership over technical and product decisions, closely interact with users to collect feedback, and contribute to a thoughtful, dynamic team culture.

  • Optimize our simulations based on performance and accuracy needs

We’re looking for someone who

  • Has a background in deploying and optimizing software on multiple platforms (on-prem/cloud)
  • Is an expert in best practices for game engine architecture for scalability and flexibility
  • Is familiar with both Unreal and Content workflows

Nice to have

  • Prior work in either autonomous vehicles or simulation products
  • Experienced with integrating third party physics libraries
  • Experience with Houdini or other DCC packages (Maya 3DS Max or Blender)
  • Experience with networking and multiplayer usecases

Autonomy is one of the leading technological advances of this century that will come to impact our lives. The work you’ll do at Applied will meaningfully accelerate the efforts of the top autonomy teams in the world.
