What does an Unreal Engine Engineer do?

An Unreal Engine Engineer specializes in developing interactive applications, games, simulations, or virtual environments using Unreal Engine, a powerful real-time 3D creation tool. They write and optimize code, implement gameplay features, and work with artists and designers to bring creative visions to life. Their responsibilities often include debugging, performance optimization, and integrating various assets and systems. Unreal Engine Engineers may also use both Blueprints (visual scripting) and C++ programming to achieve project goals. They play a crucial role in ensuring the technical quality and performance of interactive experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine Engineer?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C++ programming, 3D math, and experience with Unreal Engine's architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Unreal Engine's Blueprint system, version control tools like Git, and possibly certifications such as Unreal Authorized Instructor are highly valuable. Creative problem-solving, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are crucial soft skills. These skills ensure efficient development of high-quality, interactive experiences and seamless integration of complex technical features in demanding, real-time environments.

What are some common challenges Unreal Engine Engineers face when collaborating with artists and designers, and how can they be addressed?

Unreal Engine Engineers often work closely with artists and designers to bring creative visions to life, and a common challenge is bridging the gap between technical constraints and artistic goals. Differences in workflows, terminology, and priorities can sometimes lead to miscommunication or delays. To address this, it's helpful for engineers to maintain open communication, participate in regular cross-disciplinary meetings, and document technical requirements clearly. Utilizing collaborative tools within Unreal Engine, such as version control and shared asset libraries, can also streamline teamwork and minimize integration issues.

Job description

Room 8 Group is an end-to-end strategic partner in external game development. Working across all platforms, we provide creative and technical expertise across game development, technology, art, trailers, and QA for AAA and AA games.

Our Game Development team provides comprehensive co‑dev and full‑cycle dev solutions, across all platforms. We’ve helped make some of the biggest games of the past decade, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and III, and we work with dozens of the world’s biggest publishers and developers.

Through primarily organic growth, we are proudly independent, now home to around 1,100 creatives based in Europe, North America, and South America.

The next great challenge is coming: We are looking for a Senior / Principal SDET / Tools Engineer to join the Core Tools Team working on a large‑scale Unreal Engine 5 open‑world project.

This role focuses on building the internal tools that enable artists, designers, QA, and developers to create, validate, optimize, and ship content efficiently. You will work on editor tooling, pipeline automation, asset validation systems, developer workflows, and automated content processing at scale.

You’ll have significant ownership, influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with the Lead SDET on architecture and roadmap decisions.

Superpowers you have:
  • Strong modern C++ skills in production environments
  • Deep experience with Unreal Engine 5 tools development
  • Experience building: Editor plugins, Runtime modules, Slate/UMG or Dear ImGui tools, Engine and World subsystems, Editor scripting and automation
  • Strong Python skills for pipeline and tooling development
  • Experience with Perforce and automation workflows
  • Strong understanding of Unreal Engine systems: World Partition, Nanite, Lumen, LOD/HLOD workflows, Profiling and optimization
  • Understanding of 3D content pipelines, including assets, materials, textures, collision, rigs, and performance budgets
  • 4+ years of software engineering or technical tools development experience
  • Previous experience working on Unreal Engine 5 projects
You’re a rockstar if you have:
  • C# / .NET
  • Test automation and SDET experience
  • CI/CD experience (GitLab, Jenkins)
  • AI-assisted tooling or LLM integrations
  • Rendering, graphics, or Chaos Physics experience
  • Screenshot comparison, visual validation, or telemetry systems
Becoming part of Room 8 Group, you will:
  • Design, develop, and maintain Unreal Engine 5 editor and runtime tools
  • Build asset validation, performance visualization, and workflow automation systems
  • Develop Python-based DCC and pipeline tools for Blender, Maya, and Houdini
  • Create integrations with Perforce, REST APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and internal services
  • Design scalable, maintainable tooling architectures and technical standards
  • Mentor engineers and participate in code reviews and technical decision‑making
  • Collaborate with artists, designers, QA, gameplay, and engine teams to improve production workflows
  • Contribute to the in‑house automation and testing framework and ensure quality through automated testing
Enjoy:
  • Competitive financial reward (yes, we are fair enough)
  • Challenges to raise your XPs score working on the projects of the top global game dev publishers
  • Private medical care, paid time off
  • A culture of diversity and inclusion to unite the most outstanding talents
