Position Summary
The Modern Languages Department at SUNY Cortland invites applications for a tenure-track position in TESOL at the assistant professor level, beginning in September 2027. The Department offers majors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language; degrees leading to New York State teaching certification in Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language; and an M.S. Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language, delivered fully online and asynchronously. In addition, the Modern Languages Department offers courses in ASL, French, Italian, Spanish, Teaching English as a Second Language, and English for Academic Purposes to the campus community. The teaching load for a TESOL assistant professor is 3/3 (50% in person and 50% online, asynchronously).

Major Responsibilities
  • Teaching undergraduate and master's courses such as second language methodology, second language writing, bilingual and multicultural education, and educational technology, some in person and some online;
  • Maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda;
  • Advising students;
  • Providing scheduled office hours and support to students outside of the classroom;
  • Engaging in service to the department, school, and university.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the Department Chair.
  • Works collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in TESOL or a closely related field (ABD will be considered with completion date prior to the start of the appointment).
  • Demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching and learning.
  • Excellent English language proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant teaching experience at the college level, including teaching online, asynchronous courses.
  • Experience teaching ESL/EFL and second language writing in K-12 or college settings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Graduate course work in linguistics and English grammar.
  • Background in literacy education.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
