What does it mean to be undocumented in the context of employment?

Being 'undocumented' typically refers to individuals who are living and/or working in a country without the legal authorization or proper immigration documents required by that country. In the employment context, undocumented workers may not have the necessary work permits or visas, which can limit their job opportunities and access to employee protections. Despite these challenges, many undocumented individuals contribute significantly to various sectors of the economy. It is important to note that labor laws and protections may vary depending on the country and local regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by undocumented workers, and how can employers help create a supportive work environment?

Undocumented workers often face challenges such as limited access to employee benefits, concerns about job security, and potential discrimination. Employers can foster a supportive environment by ensuring clear communication, providing training on diversity and anti-discrimination policies, and connecting employees with available resources and support networks. Cultivating a culture of respect and confidentiality also helps undocumented workers feel safe and valued in the workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an undocumented worker, and why are they important?

Undocumented workers often need practical skills relevant to their specific job, such as manual labor, customer service, or technical expertise, though formal qualifications may not always be required. Familiarity with job-specific tools, safety protocols, and sometimes basic digital literacy can be important for day-to-day tasks. Resilience, adaptability, strong work ethic, and effective communication help individuals overcome challenges and excel in diverse environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining employment, ensuring personal safety, and contributing positively despite legal and systemic obstacles.

Job description

Applied AI Engineer
About Millennium
Millennium is a global, diversified alternative investment firm, founded in 1989. Defined by evolution, innovation and focus, Millennium's mission is to deliver results for our investors.
Our people are empowered with both independence and support: the autonomy to pursue ideas with conviction and the backing of a global network committed to collaboration, disciplined risk management and continuous learning. With opportunities to deepen expertise and accelerate development, talent at Millennium is equipped to adapt, evolve and build lasting impact over time. Discover how transformative growth accelerates impact.
Meet the Team
Central AI sits within Millennium's Information Technology organization, where flexible, scalable technology and advanced proprietary systems are core to the health and growth of the business, including the development of the next generation of analytical and trading capabilities. The Central AI team carries a broad mandate: bring AI to every function that runs the firm, spanning business development, alpha capture, execution services, risk management, finance, operations and middle office, legal, compliance, and recruiting. When a business team has a problem AI can solve, Central AI determines the right approach and ships the solution. You own everything from that conversation through architecture, deployment, evaluation, and iteration, then turn what works into reusable capabilities for the whole firm. Finance experience is not require, and in this seat you'll rapidly deploy agents and provide analysis on the edge cases as opposed to solely focus on cherry picked projects.
What You'll Do
  • Own agentic process automation: reverse-engineer manual, undocumented workflows and build agents that execute them reliably, including tool integrations, orchestration, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, state management, and auditability.
  • Build prediction and decision-support models: forecasting, anomaly detection, ranking, matching, and classification over years of accumulated firm data, with proper validation and monitoring.
  • Develop document intelligence pipelines for extraction, classification, and review across contracts, filings, emails, and transcripts.
  • Build entity intelligence and self-improving systems, including knowledge graphs, entity resolution, enrichment pipelines, and eval/feedback loops that improve deployed systems over time.
  • Embed directly with business teams to scope problems end-to-end, owning everything from the initial conversation through architecture, deployment, evaluation, and iteration.
  • Turn proven solutions into reusable capabilities for the broader firm.

What You Bring
  • 3+ years shipping production software, ML, or AI systems (flexible for exceptional builders; what you've shipped matters more than years served).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong Python and engineering fundamentals; your prototypes become products others build on.
  • Substantial hands-on LLM and agentic experience: tool use, orchestration, structured outputs, retrieval, evals, and calibrated judgment about what agents can reliably do.
  • Supervised ML depth: training, validation, feature engineering, and awareness of pitfalls like leakage, overfitting, and drift.
  • Comfort with messy, heterogeneous data and unfamiliar domains, with the ability to become functionally fluent within days and earn credibility with subject-matter experts.
  • The autonomy to embed with a trader's team or a CFO's team, understand their world, and build without waiting for a spec.

Salary Range
Millennium offers a total compensation package which includes a base salary, discretionary performance bonus, and comprehensive benefits. The estimated base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $250,000, which is specific to New York and may change in the future. When finalizing an offer, we take into consideration an individual's experience level and the qualifications they bring to the role to formulate a competitive total compensation package.
