What challenges might an admissions counselor face when supporting undocumented students, and how can they effectively address these challenges?

Admissions counselors working with undocumented students often encounter challenges related to navigating complex legal and financial aid processes, as these students may lack access to federal funding and may be unfamiliar with institutional policies. To effectively support undocumented students, counselors should stay informed about state-specific resources, scholarship opportunities, and policy changes. Building strong, trusting relationships and collaborating with campus organizations dedicated to supporting undocumented students can also enhance their ability to provide guidance and advocacy throughout the admissions process.

What are undocumented students?

Undocumented students are individuals who were born outside the United States and do not have legal immigration status in the country. They may have arrived with their families as children or on temporary visas that have since expired. Despite lacking documentation, many attend elementary, middle, and high schools, and some pursue higher education. These students often face unique challenges, including limited access to financial aid and concerns about deportation. However, some states and institutions offer resources and support to help undocumented students succeed.

As one of the centers within the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Latinx Center seeks to contribute to student success at Tufts University with a focus on Latinx/Hispanic/Caribbean/Latin American communities.
