Job description

As an Associate Production Underwriter, you will be in a developmental role within the underwriter job family, designed to build a strong foundation in commercial insurance. In this position, you will actively participate in comprehensive, line-of-business-specific training. You will learn and apply fundamental insurance principles and risk analysis concepts, developing strong problem-solving and analytical skills. While some processes are automated, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of information and system-generated results, with a focus on foundational risk assessment and quality control.
In this Hybrid role, you will spend 50% or more of your time working from office in one of our office locations (within approximately 35-50 miles). Madison, WI 53783; Boston, MA 02110; St. Joseph, MO 64507; Phoenix, AZ 85034, Minneapolis, MN 55305, Keene, NH 03134, Denver, CO 80014.

Primary Accountabilities

  • You will apply a structured underwriting process to evaluate risk, determine eligibility, and meticulously document decisions for less complex commercial lines, under limited authority and with guidance from a manager or mentor.
  • Develop competence in making appropriate decisions regarding coverage selection and pricing determinations.
  • Conduct comprehensive underwriting reviews of new business policies for Businessowners (BOP), Commercial Package, General Liability, Inland Marine, Auto, and Umbrella insurance to ensure eligibility and align rate to risk, all within your designated letter of authority.
  • Collaborate with agency owners and their staff to gather the necessary information to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Analyze BOP and Commercial Package surveys to determine the acceptability of a policy within your authority.
  • Review state-specific guidelines to inform decisions regarding policy cancellations, non-renewals, or the issuance of recommendation letters for corrective action.
  • Manage and process documentation related to recommendation letters and update policies accordingly.
  • Contribute to the documentation of underwriting processes and procedures by creating, reviewing, or revising business-related rule documents and articles.
  • Prepare standardized reports, track underwriting actions on an account-by-account basis, and provide detailed metric reports to management periodically.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in providing customer-driven solutions, support, or service.
  • Basic understanding of insurance policy services and operational workflows.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with customers and partners to resolve issues.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts required to calculate loss ratios and other key underwriting formulas.
  • Insurance coursework (e.g., CIC, CPCU) is preferred but not required.

  • Up to 10%.
