Job description

Description:

The Underground Geotech is responsible for technical fieldwork at multiple underground room and pillar limestone mines in the Kansas City District. The role involves working closely with divisional support leadership, site leadership, and district level production management teams to implement standardized critical safety procedures enabling timely, proactive decision-making regarding underground mine conditions. Duties include borescoping, geological field mapping, geotechnical data collection, and organization, management of ground monitoring instrumentation, participation in safety initiatives, managing ground control installations, as well as any other ground control techniques and methods needed to ensure miner safety and compliance with internal and Federal underground mine standards.

Key objective is performing technical field work to provide critical data for Martin Marietta's "Green, Yellow, Red" ground control program.

Location:

This position will be based out of our Overland Park, KS office.

Responsibilities:

  • Regularly perform borescoping and logging of the mine roof as the primary method of data collection.
  • Organize, manage, and file data as required by each site utilizing Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD/ Carlson and other software as needed.
  • Help manage ground monitoring instrumentation consisting of telltales, convergence monitors, borehole extensometers, etc. Duties include installation, repair, regular measurement, data management and automation.
  • Geological field mapping and classification of geologic structure.
  • Mapping of mine extents.
  • Assist with Mine Planning initiatives as needed.
  • Responsible for assisting with regular PLS mine surveys by helping to install and manage mine centerlines.
  • Clearly communicate key findings and necessary data to geotechnical staff, support services, and site management in real time.
  • Promote Martin Marietta's safety culture and actively participate in any and all safety initiatives as needed.
  • Must have an understanding of MSHA regulations and assist with compliance and issues as they arise.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Mine Engineering, or equivalent technical field.

  • Skillful and effective communicator.
  • 2+ years of related experience
  • Valid US Driver's license

Work Environment

This job operates in an underground production mining environment at multiple sites and regularly involves the operation of heavy equipment such as manlifts and mining drills. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
