Job description

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the UG Projects Manager / UG Mine Manager / UG Superintendent – The UG Miner is responsible for extracting ore from underground.  The UG Miner will work with complex, and powerful equipment to Drill, Load, Blast, Muck, Haul, and Bolt the headings being mined.

Job Responsibilities

Contribute to and carry out a variety of tasks including but not limited to:
•    Heading inspections, and scaling down loose
•    Operate mining equipment, such as Drills (Jumbos/Solos), Muckers, Trucks, and Bolters
•    Following strict safety procedures and protocols
•    Inspect equipment and machinery to ensure it is functioning properly, and identify any maintenance needs
•    Safely and effectively operator mining equipment
•    Expected to work in a safe and efficient manner
•    The ability to work a rotating schedule of days and night is an essential function of this role

Skills and Education

•    Previous experience as an underground miner, or in a related field desired
•    Demonstrate a strong understanding of mining practices, safety procedures, and equipment operation
•    Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in rapidly changing situations
•    Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with other members of the mining team
•    Flexibility to work long hours underground
•    Willing to join the Underground Mine Rescue Team
•    One (1) year of mining experience preferred
•    Prior underground and/or equipment operation experience preferred
•    Excellent safety,  and work attendance
•    Demonstrate initiative as a team member in a growing, fast-paced environment
•    Ability to communicate with all Mine Operations personnel
•    Ability to work with minimal supervision
•    Previous equipment operation experience preferred

Health and Safety Requirements

Working Conditions / Physical and Mental Demands
•    Exposure to majority of surface and underground mining operations
•    Exposure to vibrations, dirt, dust, high / low temperatures, loud noise, and hazardous substances such as explosives
•    Varied and challenging work environments (confined spaces underground) and in remote locations
•    A high level of physical effort is required
•    Includes working in different and changing environments and conditions in both surface and underground mining operations 
•    Regular periods of extended physical exertion, walking (even and uneven surfaces), standing, lifting, kneeling, climbing, pulling, seeing, tactile sense, visual acuity (color, depth perception and field of vision), hearing, pushing, stooping, grasping, repetitive motion, etc
•    Work is done in isolation and in the vicinity of working and moving equipment in both surface and underground mining environments
•    Requires a high level of alertness to detect and report various hazards
•    Exposure to deadlines, multiple demands, distractions and interruptions
•    Lift and carry up to 50 lbs in weight

Health and Safety
•    Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
•    Abide by Company Health and Safety standards and report any unsafe acts or conditions to a supervisor and/or a member of the management team
•    Responsible for the use of all safety equipment, i.e., lanyards, warning signs, labeling, work permits according to company rules, and applicable legislation 
•    Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, self-rescuer, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required 
•    Must have knowledge of OSHA and MSHA legislation, and know how to effectively use Safety Data Sheets (SDS). 
•    Follow Health and Safety requirements 
•    Completes Risk Assessments for each, and every new and out of the ordinary task
