What is an Underground Mine Engineer?

An Underground Mine Engineer is a professional who designs, plans, and oversees the extraction of minerals and resources from beneath the earth's surface. They are responsible for ensuring that mining operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental and regulatory standards. Their duties often include developing mine layouts, selecting equipment, monitoring production, and addressing technical challenges that arise during underground mining. Additionally, they work closely with geologists, surveyors, and other engineers to optimize resource recovery and minimize risks. This role is vital in the mining industry for maximizing productivity while prioritizing safety and sustainability.

What is the difference between Underground Mine Engineer vs Surface Mine Engineer?

AspectUnderground Mine EngineerSurface Mine Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, often with specialization in mining or geologyEngineering degree, often with specialization in mining or geology
Work EnvironmentUnderground tunnels, confined spaces, underground facilitiesOpen-pit or surface mining sites, outdoor environments
Industry UsageCommonly employed in underground mining operationsCommonly employed in open-pit or surface mining operations

Underground Mine Engineers and Surface Mine Engineers both require similar educational credentials and work within the mining industry, but they differ mainly in their work environments. Underground Mine Engineers focus on underground tunnels and confined spaces, while Surface Mine Engineers work in open-pit or outdoor settings. Both roles are essential for different types of mining operations and are often searched together by industry professionals and job seekers.

What are some common challenges Underground Mine Engineers face when coordinating with operations and safety teams?

Underground Mine Engineers often work closely with operations and safety teams to ensure mining plans are executed efficiently and safely. A common challenge is balancing production targets with stringent safety regulations, especially in dynamic underground environments where conditions can change rapidly. Effective communication and adaptability are essential to address unexpected issues like ground instability or equipment breakdowns. By fostering strong collaboration and staying proactive, Mine Engineers can help minimize disruptions while maintaining a safe and productive workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Underground Mine Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Underground Mine Engineer, you need a strong background in mining engineering, geology, and safety regulations, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification. Familiarity with mining design software (such as Surpac, Vulcan, or Deswik), mine ventilation systems, and safety management systems is essential. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and strong communication are vital for working in challenging environments and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are important to ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable mining operations while minimizing risks.

Job description

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Summary

Kinross Round Mountain is a leading mining company dedicated to sustainable and safe mining practices. We are committed to innovation and excellence in all our operations. Join our team to contribute to challenging and rewarding projects in a dynamic and supportive environment. Round Mountain is renowned as one of the most geotechnically challenging mines in Nevada.

Our Round Mountain Technical Services team is seeking an experienced Chief Underground Mining Engineer to lead the underground tech services group comprising of mine engineers, planners, surveyors, ventilation engineers, and technical technicians for the Underground Mine at Round Mountain Gold Mine. Reporting to the UG Technical Services Manager, you will ensure that the mine's long-hope stoping mining method is designed, scheduled, and executed safely and profitably. This role will also act as the primary technical liaison between operations, geology, and management. The underground is currently in its early development stages and now transitioning from exploration development to capital development. This is a great opportunity for a motivated individual to build the foundation for the underground mining engineering group, standards, and procedures that will be used for the life of mine.  Qualified candidates may be eligible for both a sign-on bonus and relocation assistance.

Essential Functions

Mine Planning & Design
Develop and oversee short , mid , and long range mine plans for a long hole stoping operation using paste backfill and cemented rockfill. Approve stope designs, drill patterns, sequencing, and ground support strategies. Ensure backfill requirements (strength, timing, curing windows) are integrated into the mine schedule. Optimize stope sequencing to balance geotechnical stability, ventilation constraints, and production targets
Technical Leadership & Team Management
Lead, mentor, and develop mine engineers, surveyors, and technical staff. Foster a collaborative environment between engineering and operations, emphasizing problem solving and continuous improvement. Set technical standards, review engineering work, and ensure quality control across all engineering deliverables.
Operational Support
Provide real time technical guidance to underground operations, including drilling, blasting, backfilling, and ground support installation. Troubleshoot stope performance issues (dilution, overbreak, paste delivery, drilling accuracy). Coordinate with maintenance, backfill plant personnel, and production supervisors to ensure alignment with engineering plans
Safety, Regulatory, and Environmental Compliance
Ensure all engineering designs comply with MSHA regulations and Nevada state mining requirements. Support and reinforce site Health & Safety Management Systems and environmental compliance programs. Lead risk assessments for new stopes, mining methods, or ground conditions.
Backfill & Geotechnical Integration
Work closely with geotechnical engineers to ensure stope stability, pillar design, and sequencing meet safety and production needs. Oversee paste backfill and CRF design parameters, QA/QC, and scheduling to maintain mine stability and minimize dilution.

Budgeting & Project Management
Manage engineering department budgets, staffing, and capital project planning. Lead or support underground capital projects (ventilation upgrades, dewatering systems, new development headings, backfill plant improvements). Evaluate and justify new technologies, equipment, or software to improve efficiency.
Data Management & Reporting
Oversee production reporting, stope reconciliation, and variance analysis. Ensure accurate survey control, mine modeling, and engineering databases. Present engineering updates to senior leadership and contribute to life of mine planning.
