What is an underground contractor?

Underground contractors are specialized construction professionals who install, repair, and maintain infrastructure systems below ground level. This includes utilities such as water and sewer lines, storm drains, electrical conduits, and telecommunications cables. They are responsible for tasks like trenching, pipe laying, and ensuring projects comply with safety and regulatory standards. Underground contractors often work with municipalities, utility companies, and private developers to ensure essential services are safely and efficiently delivered to homes and businesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an underground contractor?

To thrive as an Underground Contractor, you need strong knowledge of excavation, utility installation, and safety regulations, often supported by relevant licenses or certifications in construction or heavy equipment operation. Familiarity with tools such as trenchers, backhoes, pipe lasers, and project management software is essential. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for coordinating crews and managing unexpected site challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by underground contractors on construction projects?

Underground contractors often encounter challenges such as unexpected subsurface conditions, utility conflicts, and coordinating with other trades working above ground. Managing groundwater, ensuring worker safety in confined spaces, and maintaining project timelines despite weather or permitting delays are also typical hurdles. Effective communication with project managers, engineers, and municipal inspectors is crucial to address these issues quickly and keep the project on track.

What is the difference between Underground Contractor vs Excavation Worker?

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will oversee electrical contractors and crews building the advanced electrical infrastructure for SpaceXAI's Memphis Data Center — including underground duct banks, high-voltage and medium-voltage systems, power distribution, grounding, lighting, and process power for mission-critical facilities. If you thrive on hands-on leadership, complex industrial electrical construction, and contributing to high-impact AI infrastructure, join us to help deliver one of the most advanced data centers in the world.

This is a full-time, onsite role based in Memphis, Tennessee, with relocation required depending on additional construction locations within the US.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee and coordinate electrical installations including underground duct banks, conduits, cable pulling, terminations, switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, PDUs, and grounding for SpaceXAI Data Centers.
  • Manage and schedule electrical contractors, subcontractors, and on-site crews to deliver project milestones on time and to SpaceXAI's exacting quality and reliability standards.
  • Ensure all contractors adhere to electrical scope, delivering high-integrity power systems critical to data center uptime and operational readiness.
  • Monitor daily night-shift progress of electrical construction, maintaining detailed logs, red-line drawings, and as-built documentation for power infrastructure.
  • Develop and enforce aggressive construction schedules while keeping the project on time and within budget.
  • Champion and enforce SpaceXAI's safety program, building a zero-incident culture across all teams working around energized equipment, excavations, and heavy electrical installations.
  • Lead, train, and supervise foremen and electrical crews, fostering teamwork and accountability in a high-stakes mission-critical environment.
  • Proactively resolve on-site challenges — material delays, technical conflicts, sequencing issues, and coordination with other trades — with a strong focus on electrical system reliability and code compliance.
  • Conduct regular night-shift site inspections to verify compliance with local regulations, electrical codes, safety protocols, and SpaceXAI's stringent quality standards.
  • Prepare and present clear progress reports, electrical construction metrics, and risk updates to senior leadership.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years managing electrical construction teams with strong emphasis on large-scale industrial or mission-critical electrical projects.
  • 3+ years of direct hands-on experience in electrical installations including underground duct banks, high-voltage/medium-voltage systems, cable pulling/terminations, switchgear, and power distribution — ideally on data centers, industrial process, or heavy power projects.
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Postsecondary diploma or degree in construction management, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Proven track record supervising electrical construction for data centers, hyperscale facilities, or similar mission-critical environments.
  • Familiarity with Memphis-area building codes, electrical regulations (NEC, NFPA 70E), and industrial permitting.
  • Experience with construction management software (Procore, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MS Project, etc.) on complex infrastructure projects.
  • Deep knowledge of electrical construction critical paths, sequencing, and coordination with mechanical/civil trades through commissioning.
  • Strong understanding of data center electrical specifications, redundancy requirements, grounding, and power systems designed for 24/7 operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse crews under tight deadlines while maintaining collaboration and safety.
  • Expert-level commitment to electrical safety (NFPA 70E, LOTO, arc flash) and history of building strong safety cultures on regulated sites.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills for technically complex electrical scenarios.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, Project) for reporting and scheduling.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Subject to pre-employment drug screening and random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual post-employment background checks.
  • Comfortable working in industrial environments with exposure to noise, heavy equipment, excavations, and energized electrical systems.
  • Available to work night shift as the primary schedule, with flexibility for evenings and weekends as site operational needs dictate.
  • Ability to lift 25+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor/tight conditions.

If you are a hands-on electrical construction leader who excels in high-stakes, mission-critical environments and is ready to own the night shift on groundbreaking AI infrastructure, we encourage you to apply.
