What jobs can you get if you are under 18?

If you are under 18, you can work in a variety of jobs, but there are restrictions to ensure your safety and education. Common jobs for minors include retail positions, food service (like fast food or ice cream shops), babysitting, lawn care, and some office or clerical work. The specific jobs available and the hours you can work depend on your age and local labor laws. For example, younger teens (14-15) have more limitations than older teens (16-17) when it comes to work hours and types of work. Always check your state’s regulations and get a work permit if needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a youth worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Youth Worker, you need knowledge of youth development principles, relevant experience or education in social work or counseling, and often a background check or safeguarding certification. Familiarity with case management software, crisis intervention protocols, and mandatory reporting systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to build trust with young people are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for fostering safe, supportive environments and effectively guiding youth through personal or social challenges.

What types of entry-level jobs are commonly available to individuals under 18, and what responsibilities can they expect?

Individuals under 18 often find entry-level opportunities in retail, food service, recreation, and hospitality roles such as cashier, grocery clerk, barista, lifeguard, or camp counselor. These positions typically involve responsibilities like customer service, operating a register, stocking shelves, preparing simple food orders, or supervising younger children. Work hours and tasks may be limited by labor laws, but these roles offer valuable experience in teamwork, communication, and time management. Employers in these industries often provide training and a supportive environment for young workers starting their first jobs.
