Unarmed Security Guard – Job Duties & Responsibilities

Service Area: San Francisco Bay Area and Surrounding Communities

Position Summary

The Unarmed Security Guard is responsible for protecting clients, employees, visitors, property, and assets by maintaining a safe and secure environment. The Security Guard provides a professional, highly visible security presence and responds appropriately to safety and security concerns.

Essential Job Duties
  • Monitor and patrol assigned properties, buildings, parking areas, and surrounding grounds.

  • Maintain a visible security presence to deter theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other unauthorized activity.

  • Control and monitor access to the property as directed by the client.

  • Verify identification, credentials, employee badges, visitor passes, or other authorized access documents.

  • Monitor entrances, exits, gates, and restricted areas.

  • Conduct interior and exterior patrols according to the assigned post orders.

  • Observe security cameras and surveillance systems when assigned.

  • Identify and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, property damage, and security concerns.

  • Respond professionally to alarms, disturbances, emergencies, and other incidents.

  • Contact law enforcement, fire department, emergency medical services, or other emergency personnel when appropriate.

  • Prepare accurate and detailed daily activity reports and incident reports.

  • Document unusual activity, accidents, injuries, disturbances, and other significant events.

  • Assist authorized personnel and visitors with directions and general customer service.

  • Enforce client security policies and post orders within the guard's lawful authority.

  • Protect confidential information obtained while performing security duties.

  • Maintain professional communication with clients, employees, visitors, supervisors, and coworkers.

  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance while on duty.

  • Remain alert and attentive throughout the assigned shift.

  • Conduct safety checks and report unsafe conditions.

  • Assist with emergency evacuation procedures when directed.

  • Preserve the scene of an incident and avoid disturbing potential evidence until law enforcement arrives, when applicable.

  • Follow all company policies, client instructions, and applicable California laws and regulations.

Security Guards are expected to:

  • Be punctual and dependable.

  • Remain professional and respectful at all times.

  • Maintain a high level of alertness.

  • Use good judgment and communicate clearly.

  • Follow assigned post orders.

  • Avoid unnecessary confrontation.

  • Use de-escalation and communication whenever appropriate.

  • Never sleep, abandon the assigned post, or engage in unauthorized activities while on duty.

  • Never use alcohol or illegal drugs while working or report to work under the influence.

  • Maintain accurate and truthful reports.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must meet applicable California security guard licensing requirements.

  • Valid California BSIS Guard Card.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.

  • Ability to read and write basic reports.

  • Professional appearance and attitude.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.

  • Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful situations.

  • Reliable transportation may be required depending on assignment.

  • Previous security, military, law enforcement, customer service, or related experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements

The position may require the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Conduct regular patrols.

  • Climb stairs when necessary.

  • Work indoors and outdoors.

  • Work day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

  • Respond quickly to security and safety situations within the scope of the position.

Important Responsibilities

The Unarmed Security Guard is not a law enforcement officer. Guards are expected to operate within the authority provided by applicable law, company policies, client instructions, and assigned post orders.

Reporting

The Security Guard reports to the assigned Field Supervisor / Site Supervisor / Security Manager and is responsible for immediately reporting serious incidents, emergencies, injuries, security breaches, or other significant events according to company procedures.
