Job Description

A Parole/Probation Officer is responsible for a variety of job functions related to felony offenders and protection of the public. These responsibilities will include the preparation of background reports on offenders convicted in Circuit Court which will be utilized to determine sentences; supervision of offenders placed on community supervision through Court ordered probation or parole from a state correctional facility. Employees will follow policy, procedures, work statements, FOA Memoranda, Director Office Memorandums (DOM) and Guiding Principles of the Department of Corrections and will be under direct supervision of a qualified Field Agent in order to meet the goals of the Department. This SkillBridge Internship will help transitioning service members to develop competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and motivation) needed for a career as a Parole/Probation Agent through daily interaction with staff and offenders. Service members will have the opportunity to become involved in real-time case management by assisting with investigating criminal activity, supervision violations, interviewing offenders, victims, and witnesses, evaluating offenders progress toward supervision objectives, and offenders' families in support of mutual goals. The service member will receive specialized training in resources available to justice-involved veteran caseloads. This is a very rewarding opportunity that will allow service members to learn about the community of care networks for their fellow service members and veterans.
Internships are approved for the following locations in Michigan: Troy, Jackson, Detroit, Mt. Clemens, Pontiac, Lansing, Reed City, and Grand Rapids.
Required Education and Experience
Possession of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, education psychology, family relations, human services, or theology.
Additional Requirements and Information
Possession of a valid driver's license and the availability of an automobile for business.
The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
