What is a UI software engineer?

A UI (User Interface) Software Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the visual elements of software applications that users interact with. They use programming languages and frameworks to create intuitive and responsive interfaces, ensuring the best possible user experience. UI Software Engineers often collaborate with UX designers, backend developers, and product managers to bring digital products to life. Their work involves translating design mockups into functional code, optimizing application performance, and keeping up with the latest front-end technologies.

How does a UI software engineer typically collaborate with UX designers and backend developers during a project?

As a UI Software Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with UX designers to translate wireframes and user flows into functional, visually appealing interfaces. You'll work closely with backend developers to integrate APIs and ensure seamless data flow between the user interface and server-side logic. Effective communication and regular sync meetings are common practices to align on design specifications, technical constraints, and project timelines. This collaborative environment helps ensure the final product is both user-friendly and technically robust.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UI software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UI Software Engineer, you need a strong grasp of front-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML, and CSS), user interface design principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js as well as version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications in these technologies can be beneficial. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate user needs into intuitive interfaces. These skills ensure that UI software engineers can build visually appealing, responsive, and user-friendly applications that meet both technical and business goals.

What is the difference between Ui Software Engineer vs Front-End Developer?

AspectUi Software EngineerFront-End Developer
Required SkillsUI design, prototyping, coding in HTML/CSS/JavaScript, UI frameworksHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or Angular, UI implementation
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with designers, product managers, and developers to create user interfacesFocuses on building and implementing website or app interfaces
Industry UsageCommon in tech, software, and product companiesWidely used across web development, tech, and digital agencies

While both roles focus on user interfaces, a Ui Software Engineer often emphasizes designing and prototyping UI components and ensuring seamless integration, whereas a Front-End Developer primarily implements and codes the visual elements of websites or applications. The roles overlap, but Ui Software Engineers tend to have a stronger focus on UI design and user experience, making them essential in teams that prioritize UI innovation and usability.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Lattice Command and Control (C2) UI team builds and maintains the common web application components that bring the Lattice for C2 primitives to web applications across Anduril's different divisions. We serve as the backbone of the C2 application development process, enabling our engineers to focus on building innovative features for Lattice applications rather than reinventing infrastructure. Our team develops the shared building blocks utilized throughout Anduril's customer-facing web applications to communicate with the Lattice C2 backend services to understand the common operating picture, convey intent to autonomous agents, store and access files across Lattice, and more. Our mission is to accelerate development cycles and equip our engineering teams with robust framework to interact with Lattice OS to create exceptional web applications that advance Anduril's defense technology goals.

ABOUT THE JOB

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our growing team during its formative stage. In this position, you will help shape how Anduril engineers build and deliver web software. You will contribute to designing and implementing foundational web frameworks to interact with Lattice OS services. Your work will span multiple technical domains as you identify friction points and craft elegant solutions to improve our development infrastructure. This role requires a solid foundation in web technologies, efficient front-end data structures, and the ability to optimize communication with the back-end. If you're a collaborative problem-solver who finds satisfaction in creating tools that amplify the effectiveness of other engineers, we want to talk to you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain tooling that helps Anduril increase engineering velocity and product quality
  • Proactively identify pain points and opportunities to improve our dev experience and infrastructure
  • Work across the stack (front-end, back-end, build, CI/CD) to get things done
  • Support and mentor fellow engineers on engineering best practices, and on how to best use our tools
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience building production web applications in JavaScript or TypeScript (we use TypeScript, React, and RxJS)
  • Proficiency with modern backend programming languages such as C++, Rust, or Golang.
  • Familiarity with algorithms, data structures, automated testing, and other technical tools
  • High empathy for your fellow engineers (our customers)
  • Minimum 3 years of software engineering experience
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export controlled information or facilities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Have a bias for action and taking ownership. You have a track record of solving a problem if you see one.
  • Experience maintaining continuous integration systems (we use CircleCI)
  • Experience or interest working in monorepos with modern build systems like Bazel, Buck, Nx, etc. (we use Bazel)
  • Experience or interest working in Go
  • Experience with gRPC/protobuf or similar technologies
