Manager, UI/UX Design – Job Description
Reports To: SVP, Product
About the Job:
Curious how the world of live event commerce differs from walking into a retail store? How does atVenu power the world's biggest concerts and sporting events? At the heart of it, is great design that allows our users to accomplish their tasks easily and consistently, in the thriving chaos that is live events. We're looking for a design leader to help us move this forward!
We need a hands-on design leader (player/coach) residing in the Calgary area who can build and lead the UI/UX function shaping our current and upcoming product offerings. The heart of atVenu is ensuring we solve our customer's problems as elegantly and easily as possible. That starts with great design, user experiences, and a team empowered to deliver them.
What You’ll Do:
  • Guide and build out a UI/UX practice, partnering with Product Management, Creative Design, Development, and QA leadership to align design strategy with business goals.
  • Lead and grow a team of UI/UX designers being a player/coach yourself, helping direct and build full-cycle UI/UX from concept, prototype, design, to presentation of recommendations, inclusive of sketches, flow diagrams, wireframes, mockups and/or prototypes across user segments.
  • Establish and evolve metrics and research practices (user interviews, usability testing, market analysis) that drive product design decisions across the team.
  • With the help of your team, champion the design system and guidelines in partnership with cross-functional teams, driving consistency and scalability across the product portfolio.
  • Own hiring, performance management, and career development for the design team.
  • Coach and mentor designers, developers, and product managers on UI/UX best practices, raising the bar for craft across the org.
  • Travel to festivals, venues, and shows to observe features in the wild and support our customers.

What You’ll Bring:
  • 8+ years of UI/UX design and implementation experience, including 2+ years directly managing designers; SaaS experience a bonus.
  • Comfort operating with some ambiguity, with proven ability to build process and structure rather than just following it.
  • A track record of building or scaling a design team or practice.
  • A great eye and feel for user experience — you know when something is too complicated and have a knack for knowing what paradigms are best suited to solve a problem.
  • An ability to know what industry best practises to apply and when not to
  • A practical approach to balancing business objectives with best practices, and the judgment to know when to push and when to pragmatically ship.
  • The ability to hold a team accountable to delivery goals consistently, with high quality output.
  • Experience with modern wireframing tools (Figma, Sketch, etc.) and the willingness to adopt new tools.
  • Strong understanding of app and web technologies.
  • Experience working with lean and agile processes and methodologies.
  • Humility, plus strong opinions that are loosely held.
  • A portfolio showing great UI design and UX problem solving, plus examples of design leadership or mentorship.
Our current toolset:
  • Figma, Excalidraw, Figjam, Github
