A UCSF Physical Therapy job involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with movement impairments or physical conditions. Physical therapists at UCSF work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and research settings, providing evidence-based care to improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall function. They collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop personalized treatment plans. Additionally, UCSF Physical Therapy professionals participate in education and research to advance the field.
A typical day for a physical therapist at UCSF involves conducting patient evaluations, developing individualized treatment plans, and guiding patients through specialized therapy sessions to help restore movement and function. Therapists regularly document progress in electronic medical record systems and collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, and occupational therapists to coordinate holistic care. The role also includes patient and family education, participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, and contributions to ongoing professional development and research initiatives. This dynamic setting provides opportunities to work with diverse patient populations and continuously expand clinical expertise.
To thrive in UCSF Physical Therapy, a practitioner needs a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, California state licensure, and a strong foundation in therapeutic assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation techniques. Proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMR), treatment planning software, and specialized therapy equipment is essential. Outstanding interpersonal skills, empathy, and effective communication enable therapists to motivate patients and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams. These qualifications and soft skills ensure high standards of patient care, streamlined workflow, and positive clinical outcomes in a dynamic healthcare environment.
