What is a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System)?

UAS, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems, refer to a system that includes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), ground control station, and the communications links between them. These systems are often called drones and are used for a variety of purposes such as aerial photography, surveying, agriculture, and surveillance. UAS do not require a human pilot onboard, and they can be operated remotely or autonomously. Their applications are expanding rapidly in both commercial and governmental sectors, offering new capabilities in data collection, delivery, and monitoring.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UAS operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UAS Operator, you need strong technical knowledge of drone operations, airspace regulations, and often a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. Familiarity with flight planning software, GPS navigation, and data collection tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. Mastering these skills ensures safe, efficient operations and accurate data collection in various industries such as surveying, agriculture, and public safety.

What are some common challenges faced by UAS operators in the field, and how are they typically addressed?

UAS operators often face challenges such as rapidly changing weather conditions, airspace restrictions, and evolving regulatory requirements. To address these, operators must stay up-to-date with local and federal aviation rules, develop strong pre-flight planning skills, and use real-time weather monitoring tools. Collaborating closely with air traffic control and other team members is also essential to ensure safe and compliant operations. Regular training and simulation exercises can help operators remain prepared for unexpected scenarios in the field.

What is the difference between Uas vs Drone Pilot?

Industry UsageSurveying, mapping, inspection, agricultureFilmmaking, photography, real estate

Uas (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) and Drone Pilot are closely related, with both requiring FAA Part 107 certification. Uas refers broadly to the entire system, including the drone and its operation, often used in industrial and surveying contexts. Drone Pilot specifically emphasizes the individual operating the drone, often in media or real estate sectors. While their certifications overlap, their typical work environments and industry applications differ slightly, with Uas being more technical and industrial, and Drone Pilot more media-focused.

Job description

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or a related Science or Mathematics field, plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree, plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated I&T experience on complex hardware/software systems— support of test plan authorship, execution, anomaly resolution, and formal reporting.
  • Hands-on System-of-Systems integration experience resolving interface, timing, and interoperability issues across dissimilar subsystems.
  • Multi-disciplinary integration experience spanning autonomy, RF communications, UGVs, small UAS, electronic warfare, munitions, and fuzes.
  • Experience with bench and field instrumentation: oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and data acquisition systems.
  • Python scripting for test automation and data reduction.
  • Experience with use-case-driven or mission-thread-based V&V campaigns with formal requirements traceability.
  • Experience in an Agile environment with Jira and Confluence.
  • Ability to support authoring clear, audit-ready technical documentation for engineering and government customer audiences.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% to customer and contractor test ranges (event-driven, typically 1-2 weeks at a time).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Defense/aerospace experience with military standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1316, MIL-STD-882E, MIL-STD-2105).
  • RF/communications test experience: waveforms, link testing, tactical/mesh networks, GPS-denied/contested-spectrum operations.
  • Electronic warfare test experience: signal collection, jamming/countermeasure characterization, range testing.
  • Autonomy, UGV, and small UAS integration and test—perception, navigation, C2, and human-machine teaming.
  • Munitions and fuzing experience: setback survivability, safe-and-arm, warhead/effects characterization, lethality testing.
  • Environmental and qualification test experience (vibration, shock, thermal, EMI/EMC).
  • Test automation framework experience (LabVIEW, TestStand, or equivalent).
  • Linux test environments and CI/CD for embedded software test.
  • MBSE and digital-engineering traceability tools; experience with VCRMs or VVPs for DoD milestone reviews.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to develop I&T artifacts and capabilities.
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • I&T Lifecycle Ownership: Support the full test and integration lifecycle—plan, integrate, execute, resolve anomalies, and report—for multi-subsystem System-of-Systems capabilities.
  • SoS Integration: Support the integration and test strategy; support integration of dissimilar subsystems (autonomy, RF/comms, UGV, sUAS, EW, munitions, and fuzing) into a cohesive, demonstrable capability; resolve cross-subsystem interface, timing, and interoperability issues.
  • Use-Case & V&V: Support operational use cases and mission threads; develop verification scenarios that exercise end-to-end system behavior against ConOps with formal traceability from requirements through test evidence.
  • Test Planning: Support authoring of test plans and procedures across the full test taxonomy—integration, functional, scenario, environmental, acceptance, regression, and qualification—with defined pass/fail criteria.
  • Field Execution & Anomaly Resolution: Plan and instrument bench and field tests, lead range execution, and resolve test anomalies to the component level across electronic, mechanical, RF, and software assemblies.
  • Test Automation: Define and stand up test automation and data acquisition; script data reduction and post-test analysis (Python); develop automated test sequences where applicable.
  • Documentation & Configuration Control: Support authoring and maintain integration guides, ICDs, test procedures, lessons-learned registers, and as-tested configuration baselines; ensure documentation is audit-ready for government milestone reviews.
  • Leadership & Reporting: Support test activities across a cross-functional, multi-vendor team in an Agile workflow. Present test readiness reviews, test reports, and validation evidence to program leadership and government customers.

Tools & Environment

  • Python, CAMEO (requirements traceability), Confluence, MATLAB/Simulink, Git, Jira, LabVIEW/TestStand.
