Position Summary / Objective:

KMS Solutions is seeking a highly motivated individual to join a team of engineers and technicians providing engineering and technical support to the Industrial Services Enterprise (ISE) machine shop team at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. This multi-disciplinary team works with system program managers, system engineers, and test engineers in support of design efforts. 


Essential functions:

  • Provide hands-on engineering and technical assembly support in an industrial machine shop environment.
  • Work with customers to review, quote, procure, and schedule the manufacturing of components.
  • Review drawings to ensure designs can be machined and assembled, proper materials are selected, and current/required standards are followed.
  • Support technicians to select materials, interpret drawings, and adjust plans appropriately while machining parts.
  • Inspect completed parts to ensure they are in accordance with drawings and support installation and assembly of parts.
  • Operate basic machining and hand tools such as, but not limited to, drills, band saws, grinders, sanders, impact drivers, and torque wrenches.
  • Support design and drawing efforts via computer-aided design software.
  • Occasional hands‑on assembly of parts and project components may be necessary to ensure successful completion of deliverables.


Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math field
  • Two (2) years of providing mechanical engineering support experience

 

Preferred education and experience:

  • Active Secret DoD clearance 
  • Five (5) years of providing mechanical engineering support experience
  • Experience supporting a machine shop or similar industrial area

 

Competencies:

  • Capable of effectively working and problem solving in both independent and team environments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Proficient in computer aided design software such as SolidWorks.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and/or maintain a DoD Security Clearance and required access to all worksite locations. Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and throughout employment.

This job operates in an industrial lab environment. This role routinely requires use of manual hand tools, power hand tools, basic machining tools, and specialized mechanical test equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Excellent listening skills are essential. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs in support of machine work, equipment operation, etc.



Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. Attendance at prescheduled mandatory meetings is required. Must be available during the core work hours as determined by your contract/location and must account for the required number of hours in a pay period to maintain Full-time status.

  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.
